...my secret holiday essential – Elemis Tan Accelerator.
I first discovered Tan Accelerator’s a few years ago when watching QVC. I had never heard of them before but soon found out that these lotions/creams help increase the melanin underneath the skin and encourage it to rise to the surface. This then means that you do not need to sunbathe for as long to get a tan because they prepare your skin before you go away. I was intrigued so ... ...shortly afterwards.

I love holidays, doesn’t everyone? I especially like holidays to sunnier countries, the sound of the sea while you sunbathe on the beach and the lovely glow you have when you come home. Saying that I’ve never been a massive sun worshipper, mainly because I get very bored whilst sunbathing and slightly fidgety, I’ll read a book for about 15 minutes and then get bored and want to do something else. Plus there is obviously the health risks associated with baking yourself in the sun all day – don’t get me wrong I love having a tan but I don’t want to lay there for 7 hours trying to get one.
I am one of the few people who luckily catches the sun quite easily and when I have a tan it stays for ages, I’m still quite tanned from my honeymoon which was back in October - 7 months ago. I think that is partly down to my skin but partly down to my secret holiday essential – Elemis Tan Accelerator.
I was intrigued so I purchased the Elemis Tan Accelerator as I was going on holiday shortly afterwards.
Elemis are a company launched in 1989, they make a large variety of skincare and toiletry items which combine natural active ingredients with cutting edge technology and are a favourite among beauty therapists, Spas and health clubs. Their products are designed to use the most natural products available whilst still providing fantastic benefits to the skin. They aim for each item to be of a high enough standard for therapists to use in their treatments and on their clients. This list shows some if the things that Elemis strive to provide in their products.
• Medical grade and real therapeutic quantities of actives • Active natural bases to ensure maximum benefit • Organic extracts • First extraction pure Essential Oils, distilled from fresh plant material • Natural emulsifiers and skin softening emollients
Elemis products avoid:
• Animal testing • Animal derived collagen • The use of synthetic perfumes and colouring • High levels of synthetic detergents and preservatives • Mineral Oil, Alcohol and Silicones for improved texture • Genetically modified crops
The product comes in a gold coloured plastic tube which is 125ml in size, it is very simple in design and has written on the front in plain white writing “Elemis Aromapure, Tan Accelerator, Sunwise”. On the reverse it has a few details about what the product is and instructions for application and a list of the ingredients.
“This pre-tanning lotion helps to maximise your ability to tan by boosting the skin’s natural melanin production. The result is a rich and golden suntan. A nourishing blend of Shea Butter, Macadamia Nut Oil and Jojoba Oil helps to moisturise and condition the skin, leaving it soft and supple.”
The product is dispensed out of the bottom of the tube which is covered with a silver screw on lid.
This cream should be applied between 1 – 2 weeks before your holiday. You use it as you would a normal body lotion applying once a day all over the body, I usually apply shortly before bedtime allowing time for the cream to sink in before actually going to bed. This gives the cream plenty of time overnight to get right down into the lower layers of the skin. You can then carry on using it daily on your holiday to help keep your skin soft and supple and to help prolong the life of you tan. You must however use a sun screen while you are on holiday as you would do usually, this does have a very small amount of sunscreen in it but I would still advise that you use a separate sun tan lotion just to be safe.
The cream is of medium consistency, it can come out quite quickly when it is dispensed from the tube. It is a pale caramel colour and smells quite sweet, almost like butterscotch – the smell isn’t overpowering though and once it has been rubbed into the skin the aroma does seem to disperse quite a lot. The cream sinks into the skin quickly and doesn’t leave any sticky residue. I have found that the tube lasts quite a long time even using it daily and would be more than enough for use before, during and slightly after a two week holiday.
The first time I used this I went on holiday to Turkey. I found that on my first day of tanning my skin went a lovely brown colour rather than going slightly pink and then becoming brown later on, my tan seemed to be a much nicer colour than it would be usually too. I carried on using the cream during my holiday and when I returned my skin felt lovely and soft rather than all dry and parched which can sometimes happen after a sunny holiday.
I wouldn’t go away to a sunny place now without using this beforehand. You can buy this over the internet very easily, or from QVC – the 125ml tube usually retails for about £17.50 which I think is worth the amount as it really does help give you a lovely tan and because you don’t need to bask in the sun as long it is actually good for reducing the amount of time you spend sunbathing which is some help for your skin. I purchased mine on Ebay for around £9 plus postage so there are bargains to be had if you look hard enough for them.
I would recommend this to anyone who wants to be able to get a lovely golden tan without having to lay in the sun for a long time.
Advantages: Tan easier without burning or peeling so much Disadvantages: Can be difficult to get hold of
A tan accelerator is a pre-sun/sun related product that you start to apply a couple weeks before you go on holiday and you would use it until you return instead of your body lotion.
The tan accelerator helps increase the production of of the proteins which produce melanine,(the brown stuff produced making you tan). This means that by the time you go on holiday, your skin is more prepared and will tan a lot sooner (ie the 1st day instead of the 3rd)than ... ...you are very fair and burn or don't usually tan this is a product for you.
It can be used with ordinary sun creams as well but the fantastic extra I noticed whilst on holiday in Greece is that it totally cuts down the peeling effect caused by dry skin and the tan fading. I must say that this is one of the best sunning products I have used. Great for blacks skins also as it has an SPF 4 and black skins also need some protection.
You will use it ...

Advantages: This is the best body lotion I have ever used and kept my skin moist Disadvantages: The lotion has a brown colour and this comes off when in shower onto cloths etc
I first used this tan accelerator after years of using different types. I have found this to be the best one available. I used it everyday of my two week holiday and got a beautiful tan without having to sit out in the sun to much and therefore reduced my risk of causing skin problems as i was only in the sun when I had no choice. You start to use it a couple of days before your holiday and continue through the holiday and you can continue with it ... ...I have always found that my skin becomes very dry after 2 weeks in the sun but after using this product I found that my skin stayed a beautfiul colour and with no dry patches.
When using the product I found that it had a brown colour which I thought would act as a fake tan but it didn`t . I did however find that the colour came off when you washed your self with a cloth or sponge in the shower. This was annoying and you had to ensure you had a thorough ...

...now, but the one by Elemis is perhaps the origial and still one of the best. You apply it for about 5/6 days before you're going to be in the sun and then keep using it for the first few days. You can use it all over the face/body. Still sceptical? So was I until I tried it. I'm not a big sun worshipper but I have very pale skin that burns easily, even with a high SPF. Using this means that, for the first time in my life I have a bit of a tan, I ...
