I'd lost count of thenumber of times I have read about various celebrities chuntering on about this 'wonder cream' from Elizabeth Arden. It was always in the back of my mind that'one day' I would treat myself to some and see what all the fuss was about.
As mother's day approached this year, my daughter kept on asking me 'Mum, is there anything you'd like?' I refrained from the usual, flowers, chocolates routine, and in a voice loud enough so her dad could hear, I mouthed...."Elizabeth Arden Eight HourMoisturising Cream".
The following day, both daughter and her dad disappeared for several hours and on their return I could hear much whispering and hushed voices coming from the other room. Mother's day approached and I eagerly unwrapped my 'surprise' present. Voila! A 50mlplain whitetube, which my husband told me in disbeleif that he'd had to fork out £18 for at our nearest department store.
I couldn't wait to try it. I twisted off the cap and immediately was struck by the pungent smell. It's a little difficult to describe really. It's a mixture of camphor, some sort of medicinal smell your granny/mum would have given you to 'make you feel better' as a child, and hospitals - not quite what I'd expected.
I squeezed a little out of the tube and was amazed by how thick it was, not to mention the strange colour. I was expecting a cream, as stated in the blurb, but I think cream is a a bit misleading. It's not white, as I'd expected, but rather a golden/yellow colour and the consistencyof very thick Vaseline! Nice!! I applied a little to my lips and it seemed to make them nice and glossy (I'd read this is what some stars use it for). Next I applied it to my dry bits (of which I have many), including my elbows, knees, ankles and shins. I found it was impossible to just apply the stuff and carry on with your normal business. My clothes stuck like glue to all the bits where I'd applied the cream. My husband and daughter kept their distance, saying that I smelled funny.
I tried it again a few night later after I'd had my bath. Again I applied it to clean dry skin, on all the areas that tend to be on the dry side. I waited for ages before donning my pj's (still not totally sunk in, but better). I went downstairs with my family, made a cup of tea and plonked myself in front of the TV. Everyone turned to look at me and said "Have you got that stuff on again?" Even my cat, Teacake, who usually jumps on my lap as soon as I sit down, refused to come anywhere near me.
Personally, I don't find the smell too bad - it just seems other people's reactions to it. Or maybe it just reacts badly to my skin type, I don't know. By the following morning it still seemed to be 'sitting' on my skin and hadn't sunk in properly. I didn't use that much, so that can't be the reason why (I wouldn't dare, at that price). Every time I turned over in bed during the night, I kept getting a whiff of it and my husband kept firmly to his side of the bed.
I did feel as though my skin was well moisturised the follwing day though (after my shower) but I have to say that all in all it's not quite as good as I'd hoped. I'd read all the hype, and I am a sucker for these things, so was expecting some 'miracle' cream. I wouldn't buy it again and I do feel it is drastically over-priced for what it is. I think if you shop around you can probably get it a lot cheaper (Ebay for instance) but I certainly wouldn't pay £18 for it.
Incidentally, my daughter has recently used it on her eczema which suffers quite badly from on her writsts and elbows. After about 5 days the eczema had all but disappeared and the itching gone. It obviously works for her and for this reason I've decided to donate my tube to her - but I'm standing well back when she uses it as she may be eczema free, but boy does she stink!
