Advantages: It's easy to get into with some interesting obtainable knowledge. Disadvantages: The ending isn't disapointing, but could have bee better, still, as i say, it's metaphorical.

As i am currently studying English Literature, i've come across some new texts, some have been a pleasure to read, others have simply driven me up the wall, one of my texts was CHAUCER, the fact that it is in ye olde english isn't particularly helpful. Anyhow, one book i read was a novel caled "Snow Falling On Cedars," written by David Guterson. The novel is set in the 1950's and is a murder case that revolves sround a set of flashbacks mainly focusing on the bombing of Pearl Harbour. The story contains three main characters, Hatsue Miyamoto, Kabuo Miyamoto, Ishmael Chambers. The general plot is the death of a fisherman raise questions about the innocence of a local japanese fisherman which helps demonstrate issues of race and trust in a small community, as well as the murder/accident debate, you recieve a deep insight into the Pearl harbour bombing and the Japanese attack, which if i'm not mistaken has recently been made into a multi million feature length film, so if the film interested you for the informative war knowledge that was obtained, then the book should definately be read. David Guterson goes into great depth with the novel, it's extremely well researched and i have never learnt so much from any one book. It demonstrates the community's social build up and break down affected by the previous war, hence the flashbacks, and puts emphasis on the evidence and whether it is racially biased. The ending isn't quite what you would expect, well, to be honest i was expecting some amazing finale. But if you look deeply enough into the text and meaning of the book, you will come to appreciate the necessity of the ending. It's very easy to get into and despite the flashbacks occuring frequently it's not difficult to differenciate the two. It's not only something you may enjoy reading but you'll learn some interesting and who knows, useful, facts on American issues. If however reading the book seems a little too strenuous, try the video. It stars Ethan Hawke and has fantastic direction with an amazing atmosphere that is captured in the surrounding scenery.
Advantages: Small & friendly Disadvantages: Small Students Union
If you want the best of everything, a fantastic campus & a good library, Liverpool Hope is not the college for you. However, if the idea of huge universities daunt you Liverpool Hope is well worth considering.
I began my BA at Liverpool Hope in September 1996. I studied EnglishLiterature & American Studies. There's a decent range of course on offer at Hope but its main focus is on BEds. It started out as a teacher training college & it is still going strong. Other courses on offer include the sciences, IT, languages, music, drama, environmental studies, sociology & psychology.
The main campus is situated on Taggart Avenue in Childwall but they also have accomodation in Aigburth, and acommodation & lessons Everton. Childwall is a nice quiet residential area but there's plenty of local shops and its about a 10 minute walk to ...
Advantages: year abroad, diverse course Disadvantages: reasonalby expensive, coming back to the UK
Having just completed the four year American Studies course that no longer exists in the same format as it did during my degree I can recommed Manchester University as a great place to study Americanliterature, society, politics and history. Although English and American Studies appear linked in the departments name they are very distinct from each other and overlap in literature courses but in little else. The American Studies course which gave me the opportunity to spend a year in America is far more worthwhile than the title suggests. Students can effectively specialise in what areas they prefer over the years and each student will have a very different course record. Some choose literature, others international politics which helps the just out of school student to not have to force themselves into a specific interest in their first ...
focus on American writers from that era. Simple enough, right? So people that may tell you, when applying, that this is some "Dossers Degree", as I was told (by a schoolteacher, no less), where you fail to get to grips with traditional academic disciplines, are completely wrong. You get to grips with all these disciplines, the only difference between doing a degree in EnglishLiterature (by means of comparison) and American Studies is purely the focus on a particular nation. Indeed, by covering the traditional disciplines of Literature, History, Politics, Film and Culture, American Studies graduated emerge with a lot of skills that other graduates do not, having developed a wider variety of skills as a result of studying a wider variety of topics and not being confined to one unique and distinct discipline.
American Studies is among ...
