Epiphone are the same company as Gibson apart from the fact that Gibson guitars are made with the highest quality wood and components, and instead of being made in the USA they're made in poorer countries like Taiwan or Korea therefore being cheaper.

The quality of Epiphone guitars, in the last few years, has increased. With the EPIPHONE Les Paul Std.'s the only main difference are the pickups - so if you buy some burstbuckers you should get a sound pretty much the same (quote from www.gibson.com - "BurstBuckers put the “edge” on replica Gibson sounds")

The Epiphone Les Paul Standard comes with either a '50's Rounded or '60's slim taper neck profile where as Classic is only '60's slim. The difference between the '50's and the '60's neck is that the '50's neck is generally a rounder and chunkier neck than the '60's. The '60's neck can also be found on the SG Std. however if you are looking for a more phat/bluesy sound I would recommend the Les Paul Std. because of the thicker body resulting in a nicer tone.

Also Les Paul’s are definitely my choice when it comes to rock or metal as the extremely powerful pickups going through a nice valve amp will be much more of a full mellow grunge rather than a shred head type of distortion you’d get if you put, i.e. a telecaster or strat, through the same amp.

The Les Paul Std also come with either the cheaper Les Paul 100 bolt on neck or the more expensive Les Paul Std with the glued neck - generally a nicer guitar all round. What I find is that the bolt on neck guitar, is more restricting for the player to reach the higher frets, than the glued on neck. I would personally buy the glued neck, as this instrument has a better finish and is built the same way as the Gibson Les Paul’s.

The Les Paul Std.'s come with a wide variety of high quality finishes, all which look amazing on stage, and are well worth it.

Overall the Epiphone Les Paul 'Std is an extremely comfortable and high quality instrument that perfectly fits the body and would please any musician. Great Guitar.
