I like to use Ernie Ball .9 Slinky strings on it, and they fit just about perfectly - you could probably squeeze some .11's in there easily enough if you really wanted to and if you played quite a lot of heavier music.

Of course, something I do like on the Fender is the tremolo bar, especially handy for lead guitarists without a Wah-pedal, but the SG doesn't have one, so if your after the serious bending effect, an effects pedal may be needed.
I use a Marshall Amp, that goes through a Korg multi-effect board, but the distinct sound that the SG has, like with many good guitars, is still very apparent, be it distorted or clean, and to the trained ear it is easy enough to tell it apart from other guitars.
Because of it's short bridge, beginners may want to go for a Fender first off and then move onto this, like I did for example, but it is certainly an easier guitar to play than say a Les Paul, due to aspects such as the SG's light weight compared to the heavy Les Paul's and pickup placing, and even the most recent intermediate player will be able to work with this guitar in no time at all.
Because the SG is a fairly renown model, accessories are straightforward enough to come by. As mentioned before, I use basic Ernie Ball strings as there are no custom strings, like the Bullet Strings for Fenders. And other accessories such as new scratch panels or pickups can be found all over the Internet.
I did have to replace my first one however, as the input jack snapped out of the wood for some unknown reason to me or the dealer I brought it from - he said he'd never seen anything like it, which I believe to be true - and thankfully my second one has been faultless so far, after 18 months of rigorous playing!!
I brought mine first hand for approx £300 - 350 (can't remember specifically), but a second hand one will be as good as half that in many places!! But considering the high quality of the sound it produces, the tones available and it's gorgeous looks, this is a more than acceptable price, and you will struggle to find anything better on the market in this price range!!
...sound and are ideal for distortion. The hardware is standard epiphone which is nice and sturdy. This guitar has the standard one volume, one tone and a three way selector, which is all you need. It is a nice light guitar that would make an ideal back up stage guitar. ...

Advantages: Good value for money, well built, attractive, variety of sounds, easy to play Disadvantages: Wide neck, top heavy
This is the second guitar i bought. I personally have only been playing guitar for 3 years so i do not understand all of the technical details of guitar and so this review is more applicable for first time buyers/players. The SG is well built (mine has taken a few knocks already) which makes it a good choice if you need to cart it around a lot. The neck gives you access to all the frets with ease. The frets themselves are relatively long which may ... ...not necessarily like. The sound from the two pick ups is good and you can get a wide variety of sounds from them. Overall the effect i get is more of a muddy sound than a sharp noise which suits the music i play but might not for some.
I find that the problem with this guitar is its wide neck. This can make it difficult to play some chords, especially when combined with the longer frets. Another issue is that the guitar can be top heavy when playing ...

Advantages: Beautiful, excellent to play Disadvantages: May not be suited to everyone
...i bought the beautiful cherry epiphone SG. It is far cheaper than the gibson version, costing around £300 first hand and about half that for second hand, but as it is made by the same company it almost rivals its partner in sound and playability. The two Epi open coil Humbuckers produce a great sound, although an excellent amp will be needed to get the best sound possible. The guitar is "24.75" long, allowing for 22 frets, all easily reachable due ... ...most strings, which can be changed about for a more personal sound.
The guitar is easy to play for both lead and rythem guitarists, but has a very different syle to other guitars, such as fender. If you feel that you are more suited to fender type guitars, then get a stratocaster or telecaster, as they will be easier for you to play. The type of guitar you choose will determine your sound. If you want to sound like Jimi Hendrix, buy a fender, but ...

Advantages: easy access to high frets, gorgeous guitar Disadvantages: none
Slender body, symmetrical cut outs, gorgeous cherry colour, this is one guitar that promises an excellent sound. I managed to get my hands on one of these beauties second hand for £90 courtesy of my local cash converters. The retail price for an SG is approximately £350 new, £200 second hand so it was a bargain. I play mostly lead riffs so this guitar was a god-send. Because of the unique shape of the guitar, it allows access to all the frets and ... ...sound from the guitar is immaculate, especially if you use a set of 9's strings. Through the amp, it gives a clear crisp sound and responds well to any usually fiddly notes like bends and hammer-ons. It also retains good sound when used with distortion or other effects through an effects pedal. ...

...guitar so I bought and Epiphone SG Special. I found that this guitar was 1 million times better than an encore. It produces clear sound, its great for either doing lead guitar or rhythm. The design is such a great part of this guitar, I think it looks better than a Les Paul any day.
I did find that when changing the tone it doesn't change a lot, but it still changes a decent amount. I also think that this guitar is lighter than a Les Paul. When ...
