When I first started out on electric guitar I had an Encore Les Paul which to be honest was completely rubbish, so I decided to get a better sounding guitar so I bought and Epiphone SG Special. I found that this guitar was 1 million times better than an encore. It produces clear sound, its great for either doing lead guitar or rhythm. The design is such a great part of this guitar, I think it looks better than a Les Paul any day.
I did find that when changing the tone it doesn't change a lot, but it still changes a decent amount. I also think that this guitar is lighter than a Les Paul.
When this guitar is plugged into an effects pedal you don't want to but the guitar down because you get addicted.
Overall it is ideal for any person, if its beginner or a pro it is worth the money you pay.

Tend to agree with the others, Nick - more detail. Les Pauls and SGs are so different that I do not see how you can possibly compare them. Yes, these Epiphones are OK - the move to make them all in Korea paid off and the Koreans are doing a good job. Watch the pick-ups - they can be a bit flabby and lifeless and you may want to replace for more bite, although you can pick up a well-used Gibson reissue original for a song (E Bay?).
My boy's son has a white version and it's OK, but cost £115 less than my battered Studio Series Les Paul and sounds like a piece of complete shit beside it. When I was young (cup of cold gravel) the choice was Burns, Rickenbacker, Guild, Fender or Gibson, all rare and totally beyond our means. So you usually ended up with a Watkins Rapier which were so awful that they have been universally expunged from memory.
Encore are like Series One Strats by comparison!
Good luck, Tom

A bit on the vague side but still...not bad.

Again too much vague comparison and strange contradictions (the tone doesn't change alot, but it changes a decent amount), Sure, it may well be "one of the best designed guitars of all time", but why? How heavy is it? What pickups are on it, what's the neck made of? How's the action? How comfortable is it to hold? All that kind of stuff...! Jx
