I bought this little beasty from a second hand store for 80 quid and what a bargain. When I tried in the shop the sound was increadably dirty and nasty just what a wanted then the assistant turned up the tone control, it which point the sound changed to a clean an nice sound. I immediatley turned it back down cause I was having fun making nasty noises in a music shop.
This experience, the price and the look of the guitar the classic les paul shape and it was red, made me fall uncontrollably in love with the thing.
1 year on an I am still amazed at the versatility of the guitar, the range of qualites of sound that can be got from it is truly amazing for a 100 quid guitar, from dark muddy tones to clear tones for doing solos if you are into that kind of thing. The range of you can acheive is impressive for a 100 quid guitar . Having said that it is still not as good as a the more expensive gibsons, but we are taking a price difference of 500 quid or more.
As for playing the action is near enough perfect, which makes the playing experience even more enjoyable. Epiphone do also have a reputation for making exceedingly playable guitars and this one is no exception

This guitar is an ideal guitar for beginers and much better than most of the competition (I am thinking of encore in particular). You can pick them up generally for around 130 quid and combined with a cheap practice amp for around 50 quid makes and ideal starting point. Advantages: Unbelievably cheap and great to play Disadvantages: Extremely heavy
...comes to cheap guitars (the Epiphone Les Paul Special II being a mere £220) you often assume low quality to come with it. - this just is not the case here...
-SOUND-
This guitar sounds amazing no matter what style you want to play. It has an enormous range of capabilities: I can crank the gain up and churn out chunky rhythms or have high treble for ear-splitting solos (in a good way of course). The Les Paul really can do whatever you want it to, ... ...guitar can take huge hits. I remember a time when my strap broke causing my guitar to fall on concrete...I was scared to look at what might await me when I picked it up. I turned it over looking for dents and scratches only to find nothing. -PLAYABILITY-
This guitar is amazingly easy to play, perfect for beginners to pros. Going from a strat to this, I felt like it was so much easier to play and caused a lot less strain on my fingers.
Overall, ...

Quick review of Epiphone Special II Electric Guitar
I bought one of these secondhand for £75. It is very good, the action is light, the sound brilliant, and when I wind up the overdrive on my amp the guitar comes alive. And this is for playing jazz! It is more rewarding than my other guitar, a classic Ibanez 335 copy.
It is robust, holds it's tune well and is light and well balanced. I was going to buy a Gibson SG, but whats the point with a guitar like this? Ithas a couple of weak points, the strap holder has pulled out and been refixed, the frets need levelling off and the tone control is a bit noisy. Despite this, it fulfils my needs well! ...

Advantages: Sounds great, looks great, nice weight, Action Disadvantages: tuners feel a bit weak
I bought one of these off Ebay about a week ago, it's my first guitar, as i've just started learning after playing bass for two years. The first thing i want to say about this guitar is that the action is absolutely amazing, not too high and very fast! the guitar is a nice weight and also sounds amazing, even manages to give the classic les paul clean tones through a bass amp!!! This is a very sturdy guitar, minus the ends of the tuners which feel ... ...locking ones quite cheaply. All i want to say is if you're looking for a first guitar, or a back up gig guitar for an amazing price (around £130) then stop reading this and go buy one NOW!!!!! this is 10x the guitar of say a starter(or even a mid level) fender/squier strat. ...
