...uses more ink and these Epson range are very thirsty on ink, however the print quality on Best is amazing for a printer of this price. I seriously couldn't tell the difference between a print out from this printer to a actual photo from a lab. Speedwise, Draft is very quick as you'd expect (it seems like it might be a bit too quick as the printer tends to go and sound a bit mad in a speed frenzy); you'll get a print in under 3 seconds. Not too bad in general. Very plastic-ey as you'd expect with a printer at this price but the top has a nice glossy black finish which looks nice but you know its a fingerprint magnet! The printer does sound noisy and a little ropey if I'm honest when it prints and is particularly noisy when feeding in the paper. more
I'd like to write a review of this product in the hope that other people realise that cheap does not neccessarily mean nasty! I picked this up for £40 from Currys digital (not sure if this is a special price at the moment). Overall, a very good printer as such...

Bundled software/Drivers. -------------------------------------------- Comes with all the printing/scanning drivers along with Epson's standard software such as Easy photo print (which is quite good at getting you from folder to paper) and has all the usual bewildering array of options (High speed, edge smoothing, color controls, photo enhance, color mode, several paper types, reverse order etc..). The package also comes with OCR software for reading documents via the scanner.
Scanner -------------------------------------------- Can't comment on this as haven't tried it yet but I had a DX3800 (which gave up the ghost after nearly 2 years) and is very similar. In short, good enough for what you'll need. The good --------------------------------------------
Cheap
Excellent photo quality at best
Easy to install/use
The bad --------------------------------------------
Very thirsty on ink
Has 4 ink wells (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) and if one of these runs out, there is no option to make up the other colour - it just won't print until you replace the empty one. Simple as.
Noisy. Very noisy
Conclusion -------------------------------------------- Good for the price. Can't really compare against other printers as always used this class of Epson. If you want cheap, quality prints and are not bothered about the noise and wait times, then this is the printer for you. Obviously if you want quiet and quicker prints, go for something a little more expensive.
Advantages: Superb print quality for an inkjet printer Disadvantages: Can be a little noisy.
...to choose a new printer Epson was my first choice. After much deliberation the printer I eventually choice was the Epson DX4450.
Once I got it home and unpacked it, I set about connecting it to me computer expecting the process to take quite a while. I was pleasantly surprised as from unpacking to printing the first document it only took about 20 minutes. Fantastic.
When the document had printed I was also exceptionally pleased with the print quality ... ...use up more ink. Furthermore Epson have also made the purchasing of ink cartridges easier as no longer do you have to remember a long number, simply a picture. The cartridges used in this printer are cheetah cartridges and are also used in other Epson printers so if you are considering buying two printers it is worth seeing if you can find two that run on the same cartridge. This way you can purchase multi-pack cartridges and save more money, which ...

...to the microchips used as Epson is trying to force you to use their branded cartridges. I have however found that the Tesco Compatible Cartridges work fine and cost around £5. I have not had any mechanical problems with the printer and have used it a lot. In fact the only difficulty arises from certain ink cartridges - as I said, stick to Tesco or Epson and you should be fine. For a 3 in one ink-jet that is so cheap and has cheap individual cartridges ...

Advantages: A good all round printer and scanner Disadvantages: Noisy
This is my third epson printer and the first one I have had that is a combination of scanner and printer. Both the prvious epsons were just printers. I was rather suprised by how big the DX4450 was, but then I was saving room by not having a seperate scanner. It looked quite stylish, black and silver so I decided to give it a go as it was nicely priced.
I installed it without any difficulties, although, if it had been my first printer I might have ... ...by pictures. The ink cartridges were easy to install and I was up and running within about an hour of purchase. My first impression was reasonably good, although it was very noisy. Once it was actually printing it seemed quieter. I was quite suprised when the ink ran out after what seemed a very short period of time, as I do not do that much printing. Because the ink is in four seperate cartridges, I bought all four, but I think you don't need to ...

...printer the quality of the Epson DX4450 prints are far superior, but lasers are far quicker.
I have not had a printer/scanner/copier all in one before and this has proven quite handy. Build Quality
The printer seems to be built quite well, it has a plasticy appearance but in full black is quite stylish. The top surface is quite shiney which attracts any finger prints but when rubbed with a dry cloth this is easily removed. The inks for the printer come as seperates, it takes 4 cartridges, black, cyan, magenta and yellow. I thought this would be better as if one runs out, you only replace that one, however, this printer seems to drink ink! Bundled Printer/scanner/copier
All of the functions on this printer work well, the scanner works to ...

Advantages: separated and inexpensive cartridges, multifunction, good price Disadvantages: for that price, not really any
...I found was this "expensive-looking-but-cheap-in-price" Epson Stylus DX4450, and it was an excellent choice. I found VERY useful the scanner/copymachine function too... which comes handy more often than someone could imagine. I mostly print written documents so the fact that you buy colours separated (3 different cartridges) from the black cartridge is great. The cartridges are quite small and empty relatively fast but for that price I could not ... ...are very easy to use including scanner and photocopying. The software included needs installation if you want to use all the functions a part from simple printing. If only was also wireless (for the same price) it would have been THE best but hey, you can't have all can you? Perhaps in a few years also the wireless ...
