Advantages: Good toner life, crisp black text, cheap, fast Disadvantages: Frequent paper jams, bulky
...particularly annoying; I'm sure if epson had have put a little more thought into the design they could have resolved this. Its also worth considering that the latest lasers are becoming increasingly smaller in size (take the latest samsungs for example which are little larger than an inkjet)

The trouble is the jams are not easy to solve; In each of the times when the paper got stuck I had to open the whole top of the unit and pick out the paper with a pair of tweasers! Its taken me up to half an hour before to get paper out; its not as simple as pulling it out with your hands as the paper usually rips inside, and by the time I'd finished my hands were covered in black toner powder too :( So I wouldn't recommend ... more
I came home from work one day, and had to print a black and white report off the internet; it took about 30 minutes and was 100 pages in length; by the time I had finished printing it the black catridge had run out. It was around this time I realised I would need something faster and more economical for everday print offs. So I invested in my first black and white laser printer; the EPL 5700.
The printer met my needs perfectly; essentially I needed a printer which was quick and easy for printing non - important documents which was why I didn't fork out and get a colour laser. It did its job perfectly and still is doing.
The toner life is excellent, lasting about 6000 pages before replacement (I've had the printer a year and still have the original toner in!) The drum units last 60000 pages so I should get plenty use out of it yet before the drum goes.
The quality is excellent, theres a choice of 300dpi, 600 dpi, 600dpi class or 1200 dpi class and it lives up to the typical laser printer impression whereby "what you see is what you get" No varying pixels like with inkjets; instead solid black text and its even good for printing photographs or graphics with variations in grey scale shades.
Another good thing, is that firstly, the printer is cheap to buy, I purchased this for just uner £100 brand new - an absolute bargain for a laser printer. The toners are relatively cheap also; I've seen them for around £60 in retailers, but then again you can get them on ebay for £20. The drum units cost about the same but need replacing less often.
Its also relatively fast, at 8ppm its not ground breaking and I appreciate that the latest compact lasers can reach up to 20 ppm but at a year old its not bad for your money. Its also much faster than what an inkjet could produce of a similiar quality.
Yes ok so its a good printer; fast, cheap and what not but it does have its downsides. Like all laser printers its quite bulky, the paper tray which sticks out in front is particularly annoying; I'm sure if epson had have put a little more thought into the design they could have resolved this. Its also worth considering that the latest lasers are becoming increasingly smaller in size (take the latest samsungs for example which are little larger than an inkjet)
Another thing I have been experiencing lately is paper jams although I dont know whether this is to my own fault or not. I was messing around inside the printer a few weeks back and ever since the paper seems to be jamming. The trouble is the jams are not easy to solve; In each of the times when the paper got stuck I had to open the whole top of the unit and pick out the paper with a pair of tweasers! Its taken me up to half an hour before to get paper out; its not as simple as pulling it out with your hands as the paper usually rips inside, and by the time I'd finished my hands were covered in black toner powder too :( So I wouldn't recommend changing anything inside the printer; maybe I got what I deserved for messing around.
Overall however, putting aside my little disaster, the EPL 5700 produces excellent crisp quality, at reasonable speeds all at a low cost which makes it the perfect printing solution for regular documents in the home or small office. Its a great printer though; providing that youve got space for it!
In summary then, its a good economical printer, but with the size of a tank.....an economical tank?
Advantages: A reliable family of work horse printers Disadvantages: None
I have used EPSON laser printers for several years. Starting with the EPL5500, I have had experience with EPL5700, EPL5700L, EPL5800 and very recently EPL5900. I am rather confused by the subcategories offered in this section. I cannot find a model labelled EPL5700PTx and assume it to be mixed up with the EPL5700PS which has a PostScript upgrade. The model with the suffix 'i' appear to be designed for the AppleMac computer. The models with the suffix 'L' are Windows dedicated printers. All these printers are Black and White lasers.
This review is based primarily on my experience of the EPL5800PS.
I was in the need for a new laser printer for my home office situation. My needs are not that uncommon in that I do a lot of repetitive word processing. As I standardised much of my output in the years when WordPerfect for DOS was king my ...

Advantages: Fast, excellent quality, ease of use Disadvantages: Expensive consumables
Our office has just purchased one of these new laser printers and my first impression are of an excellent, fast printer ideal for networking.
----------
SPEED
----------
Firstly the speed was what struck me; the first page arrives out of the printer within 10 seconds and the printer prints at a rate of 33 pages per minute thereafter. These are exceptional speeds, considering my home laser (the EpsonEPL5700L) has print speeds of just 8 pages per min.
------------
QUALITY
------------
The quality is also good, with 1200 dpi resolution, you don't have to compromise speed for quality either; you can still get a 1200 dpi output on the printers top speed. This is a black and white printer however which is worth considering; as with many of the more basic laser printers. Even black and white photographs or pictures are ...

Advantages: Fast, excellent quality, relatively cheap to buy Disadvantages: Bland design, high cost of consumables
I'm quite fond of Epson laser printers, for me they represent good quality and speed at phenomenally low prices. My first Epson laser printer was the EPL5700L, but things have moved on since then. That was a bog standard, 8 pages per minute printer, but it didn't stop me being impressed, you can read my earlier review on this printer in my archive. But I knew my EPL5700 wasn't going to last forever, and when I found out it needed its toner replacing which would cost £50, I thought I'd jump in and buy a new one (I was in a spending mood!) When Looking at printers I think theres a few things to bear in mind, so I present to you...
