The Epson EPL 6200 is a ‘High performance A4 mono professional printer’ or so say Epson. Never being afraid to give new technology a go I jumped upon the opportunity to play with this rather large and bulky laser printer. My father is a dentist and he needed a hard wearing, cheap printer to print leaflets, booklets and all manner of other things you generally find information upon.
For a hard wearing and a (long term) cheap printer I recommended to my dad a laser printer as there is no need to buy ink-cartridges and you can print thousands of one copy. So we make a trip to good ole’ PC world where this was retailing for £110, checking out the specifics and not really being bothered what to buy we chose this because it looked as if it would do the job.
Driving home, I looked at the box, rather big and white it gave the impression that Epson did not have to put much effort into the design of the packaging, a little flicker in my mind hoped that the money saved from the packaging would have been placed back into the printer. Anxious to play with this big, black box I kept glancing over my seat until we arrived home.
Taking the printer out of the box was simple enough, open the slots, remove polystyrene bound printer and your away! The printer came with all the necessary leads: power lead with transformer and blue USB cable. Taking it upstairs to my computer was the only problem I had with the printer before plugging it in, its heavy and there is not much to hold onto, the square design means you basically have to hug it to your chest rather tightly to prevent it from slipping.The printer itself.
The Epson EPL 6200L is a big, chunky, beast of a printer about the length of an A4 piece of paper and the width of one and a half pieces. Looking at it, it doesn’t look like much except a big black box with the Epson logo on it. Plugging it into the mains and pressing the power button the printer immediately jumped into life with a whirring of motors and the general clank printers make when switched on, hearing this I knew the printer was acting typical and got on with the job of installing it.
Slotting the installation disc into my PCs drive the auto-load icon came onscreen immediately and what followed was an extremely simple to use installation program. It took around 5 minutes to install on my average comp and by the time I had had a cup of tea and a bifta,I was away, my first step into laser printing heaven!
Loading a wad of paper into the printer I noticed that it slipped into its holder with little ease and all the paper was arranged perfectly, no pieces of paper were sliding around and there was nothing that looked as if it could possibly jam the paper within the printer. The standard paper input is 150 sheets and I placed roughly this much in and I was met with no problems at all with placing it in or having to force paper into the printer, it just slid in, no hassle at all.
Thanks to a great design by Epson (even if it is a big bugger) the paper comes out of the printer smoothly and into the tray where it is supposed to go. This is a real highlight as I have found that many printers loose grip of the paper and jam easy, the Epson EPL 6200L has no such problems. Internally, the paper is kept moving in one fluid motion and whatever you have printed is etched into the paper by a beam of light, when the paper exits the printer it comes out of the front and rolls onto the space conserving, pull-down shelf.
Easy to use, the EPL 6200L is ideal for a home/business crossover printer. It has all that is needed for home use, easy to use functions, nothing that is extremely difficult to use and seeing as it is a Epson printer, its extremely versatile. As a Printer for a business is definitely a wise choice, its good DPI (600) and its maximum monthly paper volume (15000) are both well above what is needed for a small-medium sized business.
Picture quality is superb, its DPI index is of a good quality and all printed work is sharp, accurate and looks realistic. After printing out the same image 200 times I found that the EPL had not made one single mistake in any of the images.
The life of the consumables for the printer is large itself, the standard yield for the toner cartridges is 3000 sheets of paper and the amount of pages printed before the superconductor is useless is in the excess of 20,000. comparing the amount of paper printed against the shelf life of the consumables is extremely good for home use and that of a small business.
Conclusion.
Epson have always been ahead of the field in printers, bringing high-quality machines to the high street at affordable prices. The price my dad paid for this printer a few months ago was £110 and he hasn’t had to place a single penny into the machine since. The only downside I can think of to the printer is its design and that it would not be suitable for a large office. But for the price the printer certainly excels in all necessary fields and quite a few unnecessary ones as well.
