Full review
If you are tired of a speed and quality that your old scanner is giving you, and you want to replace it with something better, greater, than here is a product to consider.

Epson Perfection 1650 Scanner.

With a resolution of 1600 x 3200 (true hardware scan resolution and a 12800 x 12800 through the software) and a amazing range of 281.5 Trillion Colors (48-bit) this scanner is about to produce and reproduce a stunning quality of graphics every time you use it.

The second notable feature of this scanner is its speed. Depending on a size and quality of the image you want to scan, you can expect a quite speedy scan (usually within a first minute or so, which definitely puts a kick to that old scanner that used to take an ages to produce a any kind of image that was not even close to what this scanner is capable of).

As far as compatibility, the unit itself is compatible with majority of Windows based operating systems (98, ME, 2000 and XP) as well as well as Mac OS 8.5 or later. Furthermore, the technical documentation and installation program that come bundled with the product are quite straightforward, thus ensuring that you can connect the unit, have the software and drivers fully installed, and have your scanner running within a quite short and reasonable time frame.

Furthermore to the above said, the unit is capable of connecting to your computer through the standard USB - Universal Serial Bus port which is quite commonly found on almost all newer personal computers on the market.

The software bundled with the product includes a quite good selection (although some of the titles included have the limited functionality; stripped down versions of a full software package). The scanner comes bundled with the following software:

ArcSoft PhotoImpression
EPSON Smart Panel with NewSoft OCR
EPSON TWAIN Scanning Software

This is quite limited as far as selection, but it will give you a chance to do the basic (both text and image) work using your scanner. Once you get accustomed and outgrow the software that comes with your scanner, you can easily get almost any kind of software (graphic suite) out there and easily integrate it with your scanner (JASCPaint Shop Pro, Adobe Photo Shop are two of my favorite and they both work really great with this unit).

One more notable thing about this scanner is a front touch panel (no need to go through the software interface to do your scanning). I have found this feature quite helpful for a quick scanning of your documents and quite user friendly for the novice to an average user.

Last but not the least, as far as functionality and esthetics of this unit are concerned, once again, you can rest assured that you are purchasing a really great piece of electronics.

The unit itself is quite sharp looking and is quite portable (measuring only 3.7" in height, 10.9" in width and 10.9" in depth and weighing only 6.2 pounds), thus ensuring that you can easily find a space for it even at most compacted space your computer is located.

The unit itself has an average duty cycle of more than 30 000 cycles (30 000 scans) and comes with a standard 1 year parts and labor warranty, but as stated previously, the unit is so well engineered that it will last you much longer than just one year.

If however, your unit does malfunction for whatsoever reason, Epson has made sure that your scanner will be serviced quickly through its extensive network of Epson authorized service depots, which are usually well stocked with affordable replacement parts for your scanner.

This all, in turn, ensures that your down time will be minimal should you find that your scanner does need repair or maintenance, and that you could get back to using your scanner at more than reasonable time after it broke down.

Yet, as I said previously, this is quite popular unit with my clientele and I have sold quite few of them, and so far, have not seen any coming back to me for whatsoever reason. Thus I am more than confident, that you too, will find this product to be a really great looking and ever better performing unit for all your scanning needs.

If you have found this review helpful, and perhaps would like to learn more about this great product I would suggest visiting Epson's web site at:

http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/index.jsp

where you could learn more about features of this product, download a full spec sheet for it and compare it with other similar models offered by Epson.Note.

If you are interested in getting the idea as far as the cost of this unit, I would suggest visiting any of internet retailers and comparing costs there. The computer equipment prices are volatile and changing, thus a fixed price here would only be misleading to you as it might not reflect what the equipment would be worth two weeks from today. To get a general idea as to how much this unit would cost I would recommend visiting Pricegrabber at www.pricegrabber.com, where you can get updated pricing from several established e-vendors.
