If you are looking for a great performing scanner that would allow you to stretch your creativity to its full capacity, than perhaps you should look more closely to this great product.
Epson Perfection 2450 scanner is a truly amazing scanner. The workmanship and ergonomics of this unit are first thing you will notice about this product thus making it a nice addition to your equipment.
The slick design (Width: 11.79" (30.4 cm), Depth: 18.74" (47.6 cm), Height: 4.80" (12.2 cm), Weight: 12.8 lb (5.8 Kg) ) will make this unit fit almost anywhere no matter how constricted you are for the space. The unit also comes with a built in transparency unit thus allowing you to scan a wide variety of media (including slides and negatives, without need to add any extra equipment to it). Paired with an appealing design and choice of colors (two-tone beige and black) this unit has really captured my eyes first time I have seen it.
The other noteworthy feature of this scanner is its lightning scanning speed. The first generation of USB scanners (USB 1.1) was able to scan and transfer up to a maximum of 1.5 MBPS (mega bites per second of information depending on the rest of configuration you have been using). However, with the addition of the USB 2.0 that limitation has been lifted off and the maximum data transfer has been increased to a blazing 480 MBPS. Once again, depending on the rest of your system configuration this setup will speed up your scanner by an average of 40 times or higher comparing to the old USB 1.1 scanners.
The other nice thing about USB 2.0 equipment is that is backward compatible with USB 1.1 standards, meaning that if your computer supports it you can hook up any 1.1 USB equipment to a USB 2.0 port.
However, many of the relatively new computers are not USB 2.0 ready, so if the speed is issue to you, you have two options with this scanner. You can either purchase an USB 2.0 to PCI expansion card (if you are going to do so the Startech www.startech.com makes great and inexpensive USB 2.0 cards) or if your computer comes equipped with the IEEE1394 (firewire) port, you can also hook up this unit this way as well for almost equal blazing speeds and reliability.
As far as the operational specs of this unit, the stats that this unit offers are quite impressive. The unit is capable of scanning anything up to 8.5" x11" (this is the only downplay I have found with this unit; would be nice if the unit could scan at least legal size documents but I suppose I can live with that) and a blazing resolution of up to 2400 dpi true hardware (2400 x 4800 dpi maximum with Micro Step Drive technology) and a maximum interpolated (software enhanced resolution) of 12800 x 12800 dpi.
Furthermore to the above the unit is capable of 48 bit color spectrum for a clear rich color environment.
As far as the operating system the unit will connect through both Windows and MAC environments (Mac OS 9 or higher,Microsoft Windows 2000,Microsoft Windows 98,Microsoft Windows ME as well as Microsoft Windows XP operating systems).
The unit itself (as mentioned previously also comes with a full fledged transparency / slide adapter that will allow you to scan both slides as well as negatives (function I have found more and more in demand recently since many people are getting more interested in the fine art of digital photography and digital editing).
For a full specifications of this product including a full list of features I would suggest visiting Epson’s home page at:

(just copy and paste this link into your browser). There you can find an additional details about this scanner as well as host of other products available through Epson as well as compare different products from same category (e.g. different scanners from Epson's extensive line of products) so that you can see for yourself why I believe this product to be such amazing piece of equipment.
Last but not the least, no product would be complete if it hadn't offered great quality of workmanship as well as ease of installation and great warranty and technical support.
To that extent I am glad to report that the software that came with this scanner was certainly easy to set up (both drivers as well as other value added software) thus ensuring that you will have your scanner up and running in no time. If however, you do find yourself in dilemma, the documentation that came with the scanner was quite easy to read and follow and the technical support line offered by Epson was also excellent and knowledgeable, so you can expect a full support and knowledge being available to you both during the installation of your scanner as well as thereafter.
As far as warranty of this unit is concerned, the unit is covered by one year limited warranty in the U.S. and Canada. However, looking at the quality of workmanship and design that went into development of this unit, it is not likely you will have any problems with this unit whatsoever and you will be happy with your purchase for many years after the expiry of your original warranty.
However, it is nice to know that if help is needed, you can expect a great and speedy service from Epson through its extensive network of authorized service depots thus ensuring a minimum downtime and inconvenience for you as consumer.
If you would like to learn more about this great product, I would strongly encourage you visiting Epson's web site where you will find additional information on this as well as host of another products available from Epson's extensive line of products.
I am including a link to Epson's web site for your convenience (just cut and paste it and you will be there).

I also would recommend reading few other reviews on scanner I and other members of Epinions have written in the past as those articles will allow you to gather additional information on wide variety of models and manufacturers, so that you can make most educated decision and buy a product you will be happy for years to come.
Note.
If you are interested in getting the idea as far as the cost of this unit, I would suggest visiting any of internet retailers and comparing costs there. The computer equipment prices are volatile and changing, thus a fixed price here would only be misleading to you as it might not reflect what the equipment would be worth two weeks from today. To get a general idea as to how much this unit would cost I would recommend visiting Pricegrabber at www.pricegrabber.com, where you can get updated pricing from several established e-vendors.
Summary:
This scanner for the most part has done very well for my 120 film scanning. It scans film and slides very well, although I did notice some noise in shadow areas in a few slides that were very contrasty, with very bright highlights and very dark shadows, but the midtones were okay. These same scenes were also shot with film (I am talking about Velvia and Reala), as I was testing 2 identical cameras. The Reala scanned very well, with no noise, ... ...contrasty nature of the exposures. The software has prescan editing tools for setting gamma, shadow detail & highlights, color cast removal, a somewhat quirky curve tool, and an automatic button setting exposure brightness. For me, the colorcast tool is helpful, and I just recently experimented with the automatic button for exposures-sometimes this is an improvement, especially for backlit subjects. I set the cropping lines on the subject and used ...

Advantages: Fast, Easy to use, Come with film adapter Disadvantages: USB cable is not very long
This scanner can scan film, negatives and positives (slides) really well, and scans photos at a good enough quality to reprint (with a photo quality printer obviously).
It is much quicker than the previous scanner I had and comes with very useful software. Also has quick features such as three buttons on the scanner itself: one to tell it to copy and send straight to printer as a "photo-copier", one to just scan and save in a default directory, ... ...Installation is very straight-forward, took less than 30 minutes to set up.
Unfortunately couldn't place it where I originally intended because USB cable is only 1.8m long. But it looks like a standard A to B cable so I think I can replace this.
Is not as thin as many scanners, but that is due to the required light for scanning films. ...
