I bought a 4490 specifically to use for scanning slides and negatives. There is no doubt that this scanner is an excellent item for those people that want a professional looking job at a very good price. Previously I had the Epson 2480 and although this was good, it is no match for the 4490,expected really with the time elasped between the release of the models.
With the resolution set at least 2400dpi and with only unsharp mask and colour restoration selected the faded slides and neagatives were nearly as new.
There are a few points that should be noted. If you are a novice and just want to scan something quickly without having to set different functions this may not be a scanner for you. By selecting colour restoration and Background correction when they are not needed, you can have a negative effect on what would have been not such a bad scan, if these items were left alone. Also, as with many scanners if you want a good result but with an equally fast time for scanning, you won't get it. You need to move up in the market for quality and speed.
All in all I wouldn't change the scanner with another in the same range. The digital ICE has come in handy on one or two occasions and the results are excellent. I highly recommend this scanner as a good buy as a mid range product.
