The Epson Perfection is in my opinion an excellent well priced scanner. The price tag at the time of purchase, £119.00, was within my price range and as I already owned an Epson printer I knew I could trust the quality. Its shape and colour are pleasing to the eye and ensure that it fits in well with most other computer products and so doesn't look out of place on your desktop. If space is a premium fear not as it is supplied with a handy side stand that enables it to be stowed on your desktop neatly out of the way when not being used. It connects via a USB connector and has a scan head lock that can be operated when it is stowed on its side preventing damage to the scanner. It is very easy to and produces crisp clear results and like most scanners you can use it to scan all media types such as single sheets, magazine pages, photographs and even books. The software provided offers various options such as 'Scan to application', which enables you to scan an image into an application such as a paint package, scan to E-Mail, Scan into a digital Photo Album, software supplied and an excellent photocopy function. The software also includes basic Optical Character Recognition 'OCR' software which can be used to import a hard copy document into a word processor. Although the OCR software included is very basic I have managed to use it succesfully scanning a magazine article which included a couple of pictures. A better OCR package would have been a bonus. All in all if you want a well built reasonably priced scanner that produces excellent results then the Epson Perfection 640U is the scanner to choose, you won't be dissapointed.
