Do you have boxes and albums of old photographs? We have them in cupboards, drawers, up the loft etc and occasionally we have a look through and remember special occasions. But with digital cameras, fewer people are gathering photos because now it is easier to view on the computer by downloading them or saving on a CD. That's all very well for us, but sometimes Granny or another friend does not have a computer and so we need to print off some photos or we want to put one in a frame to enjoy.
Previously several photos we had developed were useless, someone was pulling a face, turned away or someone walked in front of the camera as you were taking a photograph. Digital cameras allow you to check you've got what you want and then you can decide if you want to print it, rather than have loads of useless photos.
Photographer paper has come down in price and is available in various thicknesses and sizes. I favour the A4 size, as most programmes allow you to print multiple photos and this gives you more choice, so you can print off a selection at one time or multiple small photos, perhaps of your wee one or family to enclose with Christmas cards.
I have purchased several packets of Epson Photo quality glossy paper from Costco. It comes in a pack of 3 containing 20 sheets in each packet. Each sheet is A4 and weighs 141 g. It is glossy white in colour and the back is a dull creamy, white colour, so there is no problem deciding which the side for printing is. It is very slightly thinner and lighter weight than photos developed from a photographer. This doesn't stop me using it because if you are fitting in a frame it will be fine If you intend to pass the photos around lots of people I would suggest inserting in a small album to prevent them getting bent or buy a heavier weight like the premium glossy.
The cardboard wallet is brightly coloured and informs me that it contains Epson, Photo Quality glossy paper. This is important so when printing you select the correct type of paper. It is A4, which is 210 x 297 mm. The wallet protects the photo paper, which is in a poly bag and keeps it flat for printing. On the back of the wallet is a chart with all the available ink jet paper applications, with a guide to which is the glossiest down to matt. Also given is the weight of the paper and its suitability. The photo quality paper I have is suitable for photos, graphic arts and colour prints.
I make and sell cards and use photo paper for printing off some of my own photos or ones from CD's, I also use it to print off decoupage sheets and cut and mount the images, the effect is much better than when I use plain paper.
Quite often, there is a free CD, the last was on Jungle Book with lots of things to print or games to play, always an added bonus if you have children, or maybe you think like me that it would be nice to have 50p off instead!
I was interested to see that it is made in Japan and packaged in Mexico, a fact I had not noticed when I bought it but I now ask myself are the people paid less in Mexico? Next time I go looking for paper for printing, I will have something else to check out, as "Make poverty History" is very much in my mind.
When I bought this paper from Costco a few months ago it cost £14.99 for the 3 packets plus VAT, doing the sums I work that out to be £5.87 for a packet of 20 sheets, which is about 29p a sheet. I have seen it advertised on the internet for £4.70 a packet including VAT but p&p was over £5.00! Do remember you have to take into account the cost of ink when comparing with developing but I prefer this option of printing myself.
I find this an excellent medium for my requirements and would recommend it for everyday use, for a special photo then I would buy a heavier weight.

My digital photos are all lingering on cds, as I don't have a computer, let alone a printer to print them on! I will keep this in mind for the future, though! Great review, cheers, K.
