About 12 months ago I needed a new printer. My previous one was the C22 epson. I decided to update slightly and chose the C86 model.
On the whole I can recommend this printer to you subject to the following.
The printer unit is smart in appearance and not too heavy. It holds plenty of paper. It will print at 22 ppm depending on the print subject matter. It will print good quality photos onto the right paper, although this is a rather slow printing process. It is very fast at printing text which is my main use for it.
It comes with an installation cd which loads automatically. Once installed it is very simple to use.
I particularly like the 'properties' section in which you can click on icons to change cartridges, check cartridge levels, clean printheads and align the printing. This is all done leading you by the hand- as I am not particularly good with modern electronics this is a great help!
I paid £69.99 for this printer. It came with 4 cartridges already installed-1 black and 3 different colour ones. The slight shock came when I went to buy replacement cartridges and found the set of epson ones were just under £30.00!

In conclusion-if you only require a simple inkjet printer that does the job in reasonable time and you can afford the replacement cartridges then this model is for you. If you want one that has sat/nav and makes you tea and toast then leave this model alone!
Thankyou for taking the time to read this review, I hope you have found it helpful. All comments very welcome.
Advantages: Excellent print quality, Easy setup Disadvantages: Expensive cartridges, Wastes ink on each startup
The Epson C86 Colour Inkjet printer is a good quality but has high running costs. The printer comes boxed with the software, a starter set of cartridges but no usb cable, so you will need to purchase a new one for that. These can be got at between £1.00and £2.50 depeig owhether delivery charges are invlved.
Setting up the printer is easy, just plug it in, install the software and you're ready to go. Like all epson printer, this one has the standard ... ...well with windows as you would expect. The printer is quite quick with up to 12ppm black and is not too noisy. The fold-up output tray is a neat feature, allowing you to clear some space on your desk, and this printer does come with an input tray too. The printer can accomodate pages up to A3 (landscape) as well as envelopes, business cards and glossy paper. Ink uage is gh thisrinter. The starter cartridges got me through abot 20- pages before reorting ...

I recently pruchased this printer as a replacement for an older model. Overall I am quite satisfied except for the printing of B&W (monochrome images). The prints come out with a slight colour cast and not true B&W.
For printing of images I understand that there is a Stylus Photo version of this model which may be better.
The paper handling is also very good in comparison to previous models. The ink cartridges seem to last for ages - so comparatively ...

shortcut, and the Epson print display will show on screen.
Quickest option is to accept the offered setup and click OK to get your very first print flying through the C86.
But you will soon want to do a bit of fine-tuning.
On the main screen you can choose the various quality of printouts that you would like - draft, text, text with image, photo or best photo. You can also adjust paper type and paper size, whether you want to print portrait or landscape, and whether you want your prints borderless.
You can photoenhance your piccies, do them in reverse order and have a preview, if you like.
Another tab lets you enter the Page layout screen, through which you can add a watermark to your page, rotate the image or mirror it, reduce or enlarge the size, specify double-sided printing and the number of copies.

Advantages: A3+ glossy photos that'll last a lifetime... nearly. Disadvantages: None that I've seen so far.
Yes, it's true! Epson have developed a digital colour photo printer which they claim prints photo's that will have a fade resistance of over 80 years. Wow, no more scabby old, faded pics of yesteryear... These claims do come after extensive research of their new UltraChrome Hi-Gloss inks, allbeit under glass and accelerated light tests.
Anyway, after buying my new iMac, I wanted something which I could use at home to complement my scanner and cheap colour printer. As part of my job I retouch digital images and continue this at home with my personal photo's. I decided on spending about £60 and was recommended the EpsonStylus Photo R1800. I read a few reviews and decided it was the one for me. The main reasons were the simulated 8 colour printing and the printable size.

The printers that support DURABrite ink are:-

Any printer in the EpsonStylusC86 Series.
The EpsonStylus CX6400 printer.

Cheaper cartridges will work, but as DURABrite is unique to a few printers, if you're buying one of the printers above, you'll probablly want to have 'DURABrite Ink' on your shopping list every couple of months (depends how much you use your printer). The cartrdges are pretty much the same as normal ones, where you take it out of it's box, remove the yellow tape, and slide it into place. They also look the same as normal Epson Cartridges, but you'll find out these are much better once you start using them.
