Before Christmas we set out looking for a new printer for the computers as we didn't currently have one and were fed up of using my dads to print stuff out. We went into the local town of Burton on Trent and found a computer shop they had quite a wide selection of printers, after having a look through them we decided we would like an Epson because they are reliable, cartridges aren't overly expensive and Epson is a trusted brand that we have used previously without any problem. So having decided upon an Epson we narrowed the model down and picked the Epson Stylus DX8400 it had everything we wanted and also had a cool LCD display screen for viewing status information and also images that are downloaded off any memory cards which I thought
was a really useful feature.
The Epson StylusDX8400 is far from a small printer and is also quite heavy so if it going on a desk it is going to need to be quite a stable one. The dimensions of this printer are 450x340x179mm and it weights 5.9kg add a bit more for ink cartridges, paper and power cable when in use. One of the main reasons we chose this printer was because ink cartridges are not massively expensive for this brand and model of printer and can also be bought separately for as little as £6.99 which is a lot cheaper than other brands of printer where cartridges can be almost as much as the printer itself.
It has features such as being able to scan photos and other documents and printing copies of them, it also does photocopies in both black and white both of these are ideal for getting documents on a computer or printing copies off super fast. You can also print photos directly from any memory cards and PictBridge enabled cameras I have used this feature several times and found it really useful it is not at all slow when doing it either even though our cameras photos take up lots of storage.
Other useful features include…
It has a 4 colour inkjet printing method with 90 nozzles of black and 90 nozzles of each colour including cyan, magenta and yellow.
LCD screen for the uses as stated above in this review.
Up to 5760 x 1440 optimised dpi on suitable media using resolution performance management.
Fast print and copy speed all though can vary depending how many sheets and what print mode it is set in.
Supports Windows 98SE, Me, 2000, XP, XP-x64, Vista, Mac OS 10.2.8 or later with USB. It isn't massively noisy when printing but does make some noise as all printers do. It also comes with the following software…
Epson Creativity Suite Epson Web-To-Page Epson Easy Photo Print Epson Scan Assistant Epson Attach to Email Epson Copy Utility ABBYY FineReader® 5.0 Sprint Plus (Mac) ABBYY FineReader® 6.0 Sprint Plus (PC) It has all the latest Epson technology that includes… Epson Micro Piezo Print Head Epson Exclusive DURAbrite Ultra Ink system Epson Cartridge technology Epson Printer Drivers and Software This printer is also energy saving certified and meets the strict energy guidelines set by the European Commission. Epson is a global manufacturer committed to protecting the environment for future generations by offering a range of Energy Star products. This is achieved by significantly reducing electricity usage, which saves energy, money and the environment, without compromising quality. We paid £89.99 for this printer before Christmas it now can be purchased from many places online for around £60 and can also be found for sale in computer shops, this printer is also sold on the Epson website for £99.99 but it can be found far cheaper. It comes with a standard 1 year warranty with the option to upgrade to 3 years.
I am pleased with the quality of print outs and the ink lasts quite well, however the colour ink cartridge that came with it is rather small and hasn't lasted that long. It has Durabright inks which help the quality of the prints, it also has worked well with photo paper and I have printed out many photos that I now have framed. It is stylish with a shiny top with the smart Epson logo o the top. The buttons are to the left with the flip up screen positioned at the top left. The paper tray handily folds away and pulls out again easily when you want to use it. The printer is easy to use and all the functions are understandable it was also easy to install to the computer so you can get it set up quickly ready for printing with.
This printer has never gone wrong and has been 100% reliable, and I hope it will stay like that for a long time as my old Epson was really reliable. There is also the Epson support line and they have a helpful support section on their website, all though before asking their advise there is the really helpful instruction manual that I haven't really used but has a lot of information about setting the printer up, it's features and any problems you might occur and how to solve them.
Hope this review is helpful
