Having last owned a colour printer several years ago, (despite my modesty, I'll own up to it being a dot matrix!), I approached the purchase of this printer with some trepidation. Having initially been won over by the excellent quality of the demonstration print displayed with the printer, I was equally enamoured of the ability to print onto printable CD/DVD. The printer itself was very easy to set up (although, I found the instructions for installing the CD printing tray to be very "obtuse", consisting of a series of icons, without any written instructions.). A few minutes later, and I was happily printing away.
The first thing that struck me was how quiet the printer was. This printer sits very happily in a small office/home office environment, although you must also allow space behind the printer when considering its location, as the CD printing tray is drawn into the printer prior to printing, and protrudes from the rear of the printer itself. I found that I needed to allow some 8 inches behind the printer. The printer has the ability to print to the edge of the print page (although quality may deteriorate slightly toward the edges), and if the recommended Epson photo paper is used, and your original source image is of sufficient resolution, the print quality is excellent. The prints dry very quickly, and the whole thing is very fuss free.
The printer connects to the PC via a USB port (there is no parallel connectivity option), but does support bi-directional printing (this means that the printer can report its status back to the user) The ink cartridges (6 of them) are very easy to install, and the printer comes with a set of 6 cartridges in the box (and unlike some printer manufacturers, these are full cartridges). The printer is supplied with a small pack of 4x5 inch photo paper, but no additional A4 paper, or labels. Apart from the printer driver itself, the printer comes with the following software:
Epson Photoquicker
This piece of software allows you to print contact sheets, and edit your photos. Amongst its useful, and user friendly features, it ahs the ability to reduce red-eye in a photo, and adjust most aspects of the picture (e.g. colour balance, brightness and contrast, size and orientation etc) The software is very easy for beginners to use, but don’t expect to be able to do anything major with it, in terms of retouching; for these tasks, use a dedicated photo retouching package such as Photoshop, paintshop pro or photopaint.
Epson PIF editor
This software (in conjunction with Epson Frame maker, also included on the CD) allows you to make "picture frames" for your prints, and comes with a few already designed examples. I found this software to be difficult to use, and not particularly user friendly)
Epson Print CD
This piece of software, is very easy to use, and allows you to print directly to the CD. The software allows you to import graphics created outside of the Epson suite, and really the only limit is your own imagination.
Overall, the software ranged from excellent through to poor, and seems to be a mismatch of programs which have been put together for the CD. However, all of the software does do the job it is supposed to do (if you persevere!)
Overall, I would heartily recommend this printer, and the price was right (Mine was purchased from PC word, which had an offer on at the time of writing - buy a digital camera with the printer, and the printer only costs £50.00)
Ahhhh! One last thing, the manual is included on the CD, in electronic form only!
Advantages: Superb Photo Quality Printer Disadvantages: Manual is on CD
...I opted for the superb Epson R200.
After several weeks of waiting for the printer to come into Argos, I finally got a text message to say that the printer was in stock. So off I went to my local Argos and picked up my printer and straight back home.
Now the R200 is quite a fair size, but amazingly it’s not that heavy and as with all Epson printers it is extremely well built and sturdy.
Anyway, upon getting home I unpacked the R200 and followed ... ...It also comes with the Epson Print CD software, now this IS impressive, the R200 comes with a special tray that you place a printable CD in, or place a label on a CD such as the Fellowes disc labels, design your CD and then just print it out.
The CD printing software is a dream to use, the only thing that holds you back on your CD design is your own imagination, and it is quite quick at printing on the CD/DVD and the print quality is professional. ...

If you buy Epson branded cartridges then a replacement set could cost close to the price of the printer, especially if you buy them singly, but complete packs are also available.
Each time the printer is turned on from cold, it performs a certain amount of head-cleaning, which uses up the only liquid available to the printer - ink. I have one of these printers at work, which never gets turned off, and one at home, which is used infrequently ...

...need to go to the epson site to download the right server for your machine for your pics to come out so well. Ours were coming out really dark until we did that.
The disc printing is also great. If you want to print directly onto a disc, the quality is again fantastic. ...have used a number of Epson printers including the C62, CX3200 etc and I honestly can hold my hands up and say they are in my opinion the best printers for value of money.
The R200 is one of the first printers to allow you to print directly to a printable DVD or CD, this in itself is a great concept and makes the standard DVD or CD look that much more professional. Use it for creating your own CD or DVD make it stand out from the crowd!

Advantages: Fantastic, fast printing Disadvantages: Noisy, instructions a bit odd
Im no techy, so I apologise in advance for this low tech review of this printer. This is a review based for your average PC user, not teccy buffs.
Anyway, i recently bought this great printer for a nifty £84 (from John Lewis). I looked around at the competition, and I chose this printer for the follwoing reasons:
1) Its small and looks decent
2) Competitively priced compared to other printers
3) Uses different cartridges for different colours ... ...you only need to change that cartridge (unlike other brands available, where you have to change the whole cartridge, a real waste!)
4) Great photo prining ability
5) Recommended by a John Lewis sales assistant (almost always a good bet!)
Instillation is easy. You follow a self explaintory instillation wizard. The paper instructions are a bit limited, and I had to scratch my head a bit before I could work out where to load the paper! (its from ...

Advantages: Great Print Quality and speed Disadvantages: Very un-economic on Ink,
I bought this printer as a replacement for my EpsonStylusPhotoR200 printer which was good but couldn't really handle the volume of photos I was printing,
The DX8400 seems great value for money at first with the Scanner, Printer and Copier all being of excellent quality.
However, if you think you have got yourself a real bargain, think again as the ink in this thing disappears very quickly. Sure, the print quality is excellent but at £40 ish for a set of ink cartridges the quality really does come at a price.
The speed of the print is quite impressive, copys and standard Black and White print literally fly out.
In short its an excellent machine but you'll be continually forking out the cash for ink for this thirsty little printer. ...
