I bought my new Epson Stylus Photo R800 in December last year, shortly before Christmas. Kind of present for myself! It was replacement for my old photo printer, as the name suggests - another Epson - Stylus Photo 890. It was a great printer, reliable, durable, making great quality prints until the day…
My promise to myself was to get another Epson printer as I knew the maker and loved quality of its printers and other "photo products". I own photo quality scanner by Epson - another great piece of equipment.
I ordered my new printer over the internet, as it was December had to wait 2 weeks for delivery due to big demand for this model.
Unpacking isn't difficult and rather exiting, the box contains: Printer unit; Power cord; 8 ink cartridges; Setup guide; CD with software; And some extras to help with printing roll paper, CDs and DVDs, etc.
Installation.
After plugging in the printer and turning it on, first what you need to do, is installing all 8 cartridges in to the printer. The activity isn't difficult and takes few seconds for each cartridge. As always with Epson there's a crib on the printer's cover for those who aren't to sure how to do it, so do not wary!
Installing the software is straight forward and easy, even for people who do not have much experience with it. Another couple of minutes and the software are ready.
Now, with all done, is time to connect your new printer to the computer. And here comes the first and the only problem I ever come across with the printer. There is no cable to connect printer and computer! Knowing about it in advance I bought my USB 2 cable, so advice you. Connect and give it a go!
Performance.
The Epson Stylus Photo R800 is slightly bigger than its predecessor and heavier (8 kg) but you need to remember one aspect of the problem: this is PHOTO PRINTER, and that is the main reason of its existents: to produce photo quality prints. The resolution for both colour and b&w printing is exceptional: 5760 x 144 dpi. Single droplet size is 1.5 pl - amazing!
On suitable media, i.e. genuine Epson media (Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper), and resolution set to the highest, prints can hardly be distinguish from photographs. Colours produced by the printer are vivid and lively, thank to 8 separate ink cartridge technology. There are: 2 blacks, one photo and the second for non photo printing; yellow; magenta; cyan; red; blue and photo optimiser. The set is capable of reconstructing any colour taken by your digital camera. Separate ink technology saves you money. When one colour is running out, the replacement cost covers only one colour not the whole set of colours. To replace all cartridges you need to pay app. £90, but again, if you consider how much would you pay for developing and printing, say, 20 film of 36 exposure (including cost of films)? Answer would be app. £240! So you really can save money and time using digital technology personify by the Photo R800.
Durable Epson UltraChrome Hi-Gloss pigment inks deliver long lasting prints. Epson claims up to 90 years. I wouldn't be able to taste it, but my oldest prints are 5 years old and perfectly all right.
All main formats of up to A4 are acceptable by the printer; in addiction the R800 is capable of bondless printing or even using roll paper. I do not recommend using roll paper due to its labour intensive and time consuming nature. Much easier is to put pre cut paper in to the printing slot and have picture ready on the other side of the printer without installing and cutting roll paper.
Printing CDs or DVDs is also easy. There's a special try for printing disks. Printer needs some adjustments before, but it takes just second. Quality of printing on CDs isn't as good as you would expect, but this is possibly due to quality of the foundation on the disks.
Software.
Software included covers all basic aspects of every day home printing. Epson Photo Quicker 3.5 is extremely easy printing software. You can print your photos in 4 easy steps. Download pictures, select prints, set quality, print. It's very simple even for beginners. Printing CD is slightly more complicated but still achievable for most of us.
Maintenance software includes: Auto Nozzle Check and Cleaning; Nozzle Check; Head Cleaning; Print Head Alignment and Status Monitor to automatically check for errors and also check the level of the ink remaining.
The last one is really clever software, when a colour is running out, the printer informs you well in advance to give you enough time to order you new cartridges. It even asks you what you want to do. If you want to order new cartridges over the internet it's enough to follows its suggestions and you are done.
Overall.
If you want or need or dream of a darkroom without a darkroom - this is it. For all who are serious about good quality printing their photos at home the Epson Stylus Photo R800 is the answer. It isn't the cheapest printer on the market but definitely one of the best. It produces exceptional prints and it's easy to use.
Advantages: superb picture quality, borderless prints, speed, quietness, versatility, ease of use yet plenty of gadgets Disadvantages: doesnt have a built-in card reader
I’d like to share this Epson printer with you. It is well worth the investment if you want high quality prints with superb colour.
• The printer is able to provide ‘borderless’ prints although in reality the A4 and over prints actually have a 2 mm border approx which isn’t bad at all. It gives true borderless prints on papers 4" x 6", 5" x 7", and 8" x 10" in size • The maximum paper size it takes is 215.9 mm x 355.6 mm ( classed as legal : A4 is ... ...a selection of software including Epson Print CD Software and PRINT Image Matching II Plug-In for Adobe Photoshop 6.0, 7.0 and Elements (all titles are PC and Macintosh compatible, P.I.M. - and Exif Print-enabled). It manages colour with various ways: EPSON Standard, EPSON Vivid Colour and ICM or ColorSync colour management using ICC profiles
• The R800 is well built and neither looks or feels cheap , it is straightforward to set up and use

Advantages: when it works the results can be stunning, photographic quality prints. Prints onto CDs / DVDs Disadvantages: Extortionate cost of Ink cartridges which CONSTANTLY run out! Heads clog rendering the printer useless.
...nut shell, steer clear.
Epson have asked for this poor rating by trying to rip me (a CUSTOMER) off by thinking that it is OK to charge £14 per ink cartridge, of which there are EIGHT (yep, a HUNDRED QUIDs worth) and which empty like a leaking bucket. Do you get a lot of ink in an ink cartridge for that price? No. You do not. You get a measley miserly stingy amount of ink which will disappear faster than you'd believe!
You may be thinking that I ... ...yes, this happens with 'proper' Epson ink just as much as it does with the £3 alternatives (if you don't believe me, Google it - people have written guides on how to take your printer apart so that it can be cleaned for God's sakes).
You can ONLY perform the cleaning operation if ALL the cartridges have more than 10% ink remaining (not likely) and when you can perform the cleaning operation (which did NOT work after 5 consequtive attempts), each ...

Advantages: High Print Quality, Price Disadvantages: Speed, Running Costs
The Epson R800 should feature on the 'consider' list of anyone looking for an inkjet printer for high quality photo printing.
At full print resolution and on premium photo paper, the results from this printer are excellent - comparable in many cases to digital prints from the high-street kiosks.
Colour prints are especially impressive. Monochrome prints, thanks to the two black ink cartridges, are also very good, although a little more effort in ... ...full replacement set of genuine Epson cartridges, has the potential to hit your wallet hard, although ink usage is not excessive and the wide availability of 3rd party inks means that it is possible to more than halve this cost.

I have owned an Epson R800 for about 12 months now and we have a bit of a love/hate relationship. The upsides to this printer are -
Print quality - Simply amazing. On highest DPI settings this printer will print photos as good as professional kiosks will. I really can't fault it.
Simplicity - When i bought this printer i expected to be over run with technical worries about how to get the results i wanted from it. The R800 comes with software like ... ...bought 3rd party cartridges which Epson never recommends doing (probably to make more money) The results from these 3rd party cartridges are not as good but for the price you can buy them for it's well worth the sacrifice.
Looks - It's big, it's black and grey and it's ugly!
IC Chips - All the cartridges have a microchip. The original ones from Epson tell you the ink is empty when in reality there is up to 15% of the ink left. I think epson were ...

Advantages: Produce excellent quality prints. Disadvantages: Price.
Why genuine media and consumables - should be a question answered by everyone who uses photo quality printer. I use one of Epson's best printers in its class, EpsonStylusPhotoR800. Fantastic printer, it produces exceptional prints and reproduces vivid and crisp colours. I just love my printer. But why are the prints so good? Is it because of the quality of the paper? Yes, but not only! Good photo printer and very good photo paper wouldn't give exceptional results without suitable ink. But suitable isn't good enough. It must be best ink for the printer.
Epson have lunched the R800 and R18000 range of printer and of course cartridges for them with photo quality prints in mind. They successfully delivered excellent photo printers. But to achieve the best results from your excellent printer you need to use genuine media ...
Advantages: Very Silent, quick and excellent resolution dpi Disadvantages: I've not found one yet..heh !!
Hi there everyone, I've bought the EpsonStylusPhotoR300 about a week ago and I must say it's ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!! I used to have an Epsonstylusphoto800 and I must say YOU CAN REALLY SEE THE DIFFERENCE!!! The resolution is great (with up to 5760 dpi !!! ) The ink cartridges are separate so you can change only one if you run out of ink!! There is also a mini Lcd screen on the right side that allows you to print your photos directly from your digital camera or even from your memory card (whichever it is!!!). This Printer is also one of the only ones from the Epson range that allows you to print directly on the surface of your CDs!! I?ve tried it and it really works!!
In about a week I?ve printed more that 50 photographs and 4 cd covers ?.My only comment is FANTASTIC!!! The resolution and the texture of the photos is as good as ...
