I have owned an Epson R800 for about 12 months now and we have a bit of a love/hate relationship. The upsides to this printer are -
Print quality - Simply amazing. On highest DPI settings this printer will print photos as good as professional kiosks will. I really can't fault it.
Simplicity - When i bought this printer i expected to be over run with technical worries about how to get the results i wanted from it. The R800 comes with software like Epson photoquicker, Print cd and many others. These programs make using the R800 simple, more so than any other printer i have owned. There are some in depth setting under advanced settings but Epsons manual didn't quite give me the confidence to try them out.
Technology - I believe the R800 prints using the worlds smallest ink droplets of 1.5pl and printing at 5760 x 1440 DPI gives jaw dropping prints. USB 1.0/2.0 and IEEE 1394 firewire connections made connection easy. The R800 will print faster using USB 2.0 and IEEE 1394 firewire with noticeable difference.
CD/DVD Printing - The R800 prints directly onto printable cd/dvd media. With the right media it will give you almost professional looking printed disks. It prints best on glossy media but these can be expensive.
Some downsides to the R800.
Ink cartridges - This was quite a big disappointment for me. Considering the price of each cartridge is on average £10, £70 for a full set is extreme. You also cannot continue printing if one is empty. I recently bought 3rd party cartridges which Epson never recommends doing (probably to make more money) The results from these 3rd party cartridges are not as good but for the price you can buy them for it's well worth the sacrifice.
Looks - It's big, it's black and grey and it's ugly!
IC Chips - All the cartridges have a microchip. The original ones from Epson tell you the ink is empty when in reality there is up to 15% of the ink left. I think epson were after a quick buck when they came up with this idea. 3rd party ones work but not all the time, sometimes the printer will reject them.
Features - I was supprised it lacked some simple features which many cheaper printers come standard with. No lcd screen, no card slot are two big ones i was disappointed with.
Head cleaner - Sometimes my prints get messy with horizontal lines and it takes the head cleaner 2 or more goes to correct it. Head cleaning uses a lot of ink and with the price of the cartridges this is annoying.
Over all, if you want the best quality prints up to A4 then the R800 is about the best. It does what it's supposed to and it does it extremely well.
