It has been another good year for South African Ernie Els. He has had big wins in the Loch Lomond event when he held off the challenge of Colin Montgomerie and Tom Lehman and also the Million Dollar Classic in Johannesburg when he pipped Lee Westwood.
Els is widely regarded as one of the nicest people on the US golf tour and he is a commensurate professional whose demeanour on the course is an example to all. His comments about courses and fellow professionals are always complementary and he always seems courteous to the media.
Els has a complete game being a long and accurate hitter off the tee as well as strong around the greens. His recovery play from bunkers was crucial in his wins where a shot dropped could have made all the difference in the closing holes.
One of his main strengths comes from a very rhythmic and regular swing. It is apparent that Els’s swing is a natural extension of his body movement and requires little alteration whatever shot he is playing. His swing has an almost lethargic look to it and that belies the immense power he has.
If there is one question mark over Ernie Els is that he does not appear to display the hunger for victory perhaps seen in Tiger Woods, David Duval or Colin Montgomerie. Perhaps with more hunger he would add more majors to the US Open titles he has won in 1994 and 1997. Whatever he may do though Els will remain a hugely popular golfer not least with me.
The easy-swinging South African boasts one of the most consistent Open records in recent times with five finishes inside the top 12 since 1992 including a second at Lytham in 1996 and a tied 11th at St Andrews in 1995. Suffered a surprisingly slump in the Majors after the second of his two US Open wins in 1997 but with his focus back again this year he's finished runner-up in both the Masters and the US Open. And there's plenty of evidence to suggest ... ...well as that tied 11th spot in 1995 Els has also played some sparkling golf in the Dunhill Cup. The Big Easy gave his confidence another shot in the arm at Loch Lomond last week as he held off some high class challengers to land his first win in 17 months. He loves the Old Course and although Woods has become something of a bogey man to him of late, Els knows that with his extra experience of St Andrews, this could be his best chance to put one over ...

Advantages: great swing Disadvantages: looks distant at times
Ernie Els is known colloquially in golfing circles as the big easy this does not refer to a New Orleans origin but merely the apparent ease with which he propels the ball great distances. His swing has such sublime rythm and tempo that many have questioned why he has only won two major championships. He too may be contemplting the same question has he clutches 3 winners up medals for the three majors held this year. That is the same number of times ...

Lehman landed a deserved first Major at the 1996 Open as he held off Nick Faldo on the final day - something that had proved beyond Greg Norman in the US Masters just three months earlier. Conditions were calm at Lytham that year and Lehman made his move with a brilliant third round 64. Despite being a good wind player in America, he hasn't been able to challenge when it's blown a gale in Opens and he's missed the cut for the last two years. Came over to get a taste of St Andrews in the 1999 Dunhill Cup but didn't hit the heights as he lost two of his three matches and couldn't shoot better than a 71. He returns to the course after an excellent showing at Loch Lomond where he finished runner-up to ErnieEls. However he will still be kicking himself for driving into the water at the 72nd hole when a par would have taken him into a play ...

Advantages: Young and talented. Disadvantages: Lack of experience on a links course.
playing well within his capabilities, using 3 woods off the tee when he would use a driver if he felt under pressure. He looks to be enjoying his game, which is another sign he is on top form.
I just hope someone (Sergio Garcia, ErnieEls, anyone!) can mount a serious challenge to him. ...

ErnieEls in 1997. Also defeated in sudden death by Steve Elkington for the US PGA title in 1995.
Colin's biggest desire is to win a major tournament. They call Monty Mrs Doubtfire in the states due to his temper and is unjustifiably goaded by spectators in the US. Never underestimate Colin as he is one of the finest golfers Europe has ever produced. ...
