Coffee Machine

Whether you’re looking for a good Italian coffee or you just want the occasional hit of caffeine, coffee machines have increasingly become an important feature of the modern kitchen. With increasingly busy consumers spending less time on the high street, grabbing a coffee at home is an increasingly popular option – and our expectations are high!

There is a wide choice of coffee machines to select for your kitchen with a variety of added extras to make your coffee in just the way you want. The Ciao Shopping Guide to Coffee Machines gives the coffee enthusiast an overview of some of the most important features to bear in mind – whether you’re perfect for an espresso machine or more suited to a classic filter coffee maker.

Don’t forget that different machines will suit different people. The first decision to make is whether you are a frequent or occasional coffee drinker, as this will affect the investment that you’re prepared to make.

noisy devil

Advantages: none
Disadvantages: only takes espresso cups

...noisy. I did phone Breville when I had trouble with the first and they told me they took that model out of production ages ago... I havnt tried any coffee in it yet because, although I have put through 2 tanks of water the water that comes out smells highly of chlorine and looks cloudy so I dont fancy drinking it. I have also got a little stove top jobbie which makes excellent coffee so this CW3 has got hard work to compare to the simple old fashioned ...

A Coffee shop in your own Kitchen

Advantages: You need never pop out for a 'cap' again
Disadvantages: Cleaning the milk steamer nozzle

As a bit of a gadget junky this was one of the best Christmas presents I could get! Forget Champagne Cocktails with breakfast this year, we had caps and expresso. The machines is all pretty much assembled when you unpack it, and the instructions are concise and simple, although I must admit that it did take two adults and several attempts to make the first cup of cappuccino! The filter coffee maker is a breeze for those who are used to making filter ...
...water in the top, coffee in the (permanent) filter and press go, for great filter coffee. Expresso does require that you read the instructions and even using medium and not strong coffee grounds you get a cup of pure wake up juice! Now we get to cappuccino, this took two of us several attempts to get a hot, frothy, coffee cups of heaven - Starbucks eat your heart out; I have my own cappuccino maker and won’t be paying extortionate prices ...

Crema to crema

Advantages: 15 bar pump for less than £50
Disadvantages: Cheap machine, cheap components

This machine is really exactly the same as the 2 before it. The positive side to the machine is that it is cheap, a 15 bar pump which has the potential to give you a great espresso, a good crema and quality frothed milk. The negative can outweight he positive though. The machine is easy to use but very difficult to make a nice coffee. It honestly took me nearly 4 months to master the creation of my perfect coffee. Now, I am more than happy to admit ...
...coffee but 4 months of experimenting? You need to get the grind of the bean perfect, i would recommend 2.5 for this machine. Any more or if you pack the coffee to tightly the seal will not take the back pressure and you end up with the group bursting out and grinds going everywhere, I mean everywhere! Any less than 2.5 and you end up with a really watery espresso with most of the grinds floating around the cup. I buy my coffee freshly ground from ...

A beautiful waste of space

Advantages: pretty, good coffee
Disadvantages: pain to clean, not really worth it!

...time. I chose the Dualit because its beautiful (undeniably) - it does look gorgeous on the work surface, and anyone who comes round seems to say "ooh, I wish I had one of those" - which subconciously as consumers is EXACTLY what you want to hear. The downside of that is that the visitor's next words are invariably "make me a coffee!"... and because you're still high on being the object of envy, you have no alternative than to adopt a fixed smile ...
...swearing at the further 15 minutes of cleaning the machine will need later on. In fairness, it makes very good coffee - not at the level of proper bean-to-cup machines like they use in coffee shops, but a pretty close second - especially if you use really high quality ingredients. But it's quite tricky to use, and took me around twenty cups to get to anything like decent espresso (that was a wired evening!). Once you've got the hang of it, it's ...

Gaggia Baby Class Quality? I don't think so!!!!

Advantages: Looks Good
Disadvantages: Poor build quality/quality conrol

...died through overuse), With a Gaggia Baby Class Espresso machine. Machine 1 arrived, I followed the instructions to the letter turned on the machine to flush it through and had water coming through every part of the machine except where it was supposed to. One very wet kitchen work top, one very unhappy customer. This machine was returned and replaced with a second machine. Machine 2; This was plugged in and used, all seemed OK until I tuned on ...
...and squirted scalding hat water around the kitchen. Upon investigating the cause of this I also noted 3 dents to the stainless steel back plate on the machine, This machine was promptly returned and a replacement ordered. Machine 3; exactly the same problem as machine 1. This machine has been returned and a full refund requested. I Have now oredered another Delonghi. I have been extremely disappointed with the build quality of these machines as ...
