Advantages Advantages Accademic reputation is deserved

Disadvantages Disadvantages some accomodation is inadequate, lots of foreign students

I did both a BA and part of an MA at Essex. The campus is set in a landscaped park on the outskirts of Colchester and if you can ignore the ugliness of the buildings (60s brutalist architechture of the worst sort)you would be hard pressed to find a more attractive campus anywhere in the country. The accomodation ranges from the barrack-like towers and off campus accomodation to the modern and pleasant South courts. It is often difficult to get places in the better accomodation (and of course you get what you pay for). It is relatively easy to find cheap private accomodation within easy walking ... more

Advantages Advantages A whole bunch of weird and wonderful people, many nationalities, a nice bar!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Made completely of concrete...

Just so no-one else asks, Essex University is in Colchester! Sorry - forgot to mention that one... Don't get me wrong - I absolutely loved my 3 years at Essex, but some of the campus layout has a little to be desired! It is set out in squares (originally named Squares 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5), with Square 5 at the top, and each square a little lower that the last, until you get the Psychology department which, if anyone has seen From Dusk Till Dawn, looks much like the Titty Twister bar (from the back)! My accomodation was in Bertrand Russell Tower, and I wouldn't have given it up for anything. Yes ... more

Advantages Advantages Atmosphere, social life, everything you need on campus and close to accommodation, friendly people

Disadvantages Disadvantages Slight disorganisation, out-of-date buildings

I have loved studying at Essex. I found my course very interesting and it's opened up so many avenues of interest for me both educationally and on a personal level. I would recommend Essex to any prospective students because the atmosphere is outstanding - adding to and enhancing the whole experience. Essex is a campus university, meaning that everything is all on one site - teaching rooms, accommodation, research facilities and leisure services. There are so many services onsite it would be impossible to list them all here, but I think Essex pretty much has everything covered from sport to ... more

    Advantages Advantages Academically excellent

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Concrete buildings

The University of Essex is fairly small with around 7000 students. About 5000 of these are undergraduates and the remaining 2000 are postgraduates. The university is set in Wivenhoe Park, a beautiful 200 acre country park situated on the outskirts of Colchester. The university was built in the 1960s at roughly the same time as Warwick, York and the UEA. Its concrete buildings are not particularly attractive aesthetically, but the construction of more modern buildings in recent years has given the campus a more contemporary feel. The most recent of these is a new centre homing the departments ... more
