When our vet got the results back he immediately had us put the puppy on adult maintenance dog food (an excellent brand, Iams, same parent company that makes Eukanuba) He also impressed upon us the CRITICAL need to keep the dogs weight down for at least the first 18 months while he is actively ... Advantages: Excellent company Disadvantages: Not good for all situations with large breed puppies
First let me say that I have an animal science degree from Cornell University with a concentration in animal nutrition and microbiology.
I have to disagree with the comments from the manufacturer on it's appropriateness for all large breed puppies. I choose this product originally on the advice of a pet shop owner for our German Shepherd puppy. It's easily one of the highest priced on the market and the company is well established ... ...However, on the advice of our veterinarian, a surgical specialist in spinal, bone and joint problems in dogs and cats, we stopped using the product. Because German Shepherds are prone to hip dysplasia, feeding the wrong balance of protein and calories during the growth phase of the long bones can really be dangerous to the dog.
We spent the $400 to have the Penn hip test done on our dog. One of his hips is excellent and the other is ... more

I have to disagree with the comments from the manufacturer on it's appropriateness for all large breed puppies. I choose this product originally on the advice of a pet shop owner for our German Shepherd puppy. It's easily one of the highest priced on the market and the company is well established as a leader in dog food production.
However, on the advice of our veterinarian, a surgical specialist in spinal, bone and joint problems in dogs and cats, we stopped using the product. Because German Shepherds are prone to hip dysplasia, feeding the wrong balance of protein and calories during the growth phase of the long bones can really be dangerous to the dog.
We spent the $400 to have the Penn hip test done on our dog. One of his hips is excellent and the other is marginal for its propensity to develop hip dysplasia. When our vet got the results back he immediately had us put the puppy on adult maintenance dog food (an excellent brand, Iams, same parent company that makes Eukanuba) He also impressed upon us the CRITICAL need to keep the dogs weight down for at least the first 18 months while he is actively growing. So far (17 months) the dog is having no hip problems and the vet is extremely pleased with his growth and joint development.
It is very important to work with your vets and vet specialists when you have a dog that is prone to any type of potentially genetically predisposed problems. Why pay a fortune for a puppy and then ignore the vets advice later on?
All of our other dogs and cats are mixed breeds or rescued pedigrees (a basset) I don't normally advocate buying purebred dogs. I just really wanted a German Shepherd this time and he's great. A real knucklehead who gets along with everyone.
Advantages: Extremely nutritious dog food - excellent quality Disadvantages: Expensive, hard to aquire
Eukanuba are now almost a household name due to their excellent quality foods for dogs, however many people still feed their dogs tinned food. This is not a healthy option for your dog, and though they undoubtedly love their meaty chunks in jelly, a dry food will be better for their digestive system and also make their coat and teeth better conditioned.
I have this knowledge because I worked in a pet shop for a long period of time, and every time someone came into the shop with their new puppy asking which food to reccomend, this was the one that I put forward.
There are several flavours and I have tested my own dog on many of them. These are:
Puppy
Eukanuba Puppy & Junior Small Breed
Eukanuba Puppy & Junior Medium Breed
Eukanuba Puppy & Junior Large Breed
Eukanuba Puppy & Junior Rich in Lamb & Rice
Adult ...

Advantages: Not any nasty additives, fairly cheap if bought in bulk Disadvantages: Not sold in supermarkets
My cat is a Persian and was getting a lot of hairballs as a kitten. We asked advice in our local pet shop and they thoroughly recommended Eukanuba Hairball Control food, so we bought a trial size pouch and put it down at her next feed time.
She ate it like she hadn't eaten in ages - she really seemed to enjoy it and was chirping & purring through every mouthful - something she still does 3 years on.
She will not even touch any other food now - I understand through talking to the petshop owner that most 'wet' food has a really high amount of Caramel in it to make it taste nice and not much meat at all - wheras the Eukanuba is really meaty.
Her hairballs are greatly reduced as the food makes the hair pass through the system.
I would not ever feed her anything else now. The only problem is the pet shop we know stocks it is ...

Advantages: Sadie doesn't eat much of it so it lasts forever Disadvantages: She's hungary
Ive got two dogs one is a heinz 57, the other, a pedigree chump. I've had Scamper (57) 7 years and she has always been a happy healthy dog. She has been fed on canned food since she was weaned with no adverse affects.
When I got Sadie (chump) a beautiful golden lab I was told you had to feed her on Eukanuba otherwise it would affect her growth ,coat, and all manner of other nasty things. I tried giving her the biscuits at 8 weeks but to no avail. She wanted what her big sister was eating and would finish off the remaining bits of food that Scamper had left.
After a week of fighting Sadie won and I was a little afraid that her growth would be stunted. Two years later I now realise that I had nothing to worry about. Sadie has turned into a little donkey and is very healthy and happy and is also bigger than both the bitch and sire. In ...
