When I was looking through my Gold box offers on Amazon.com, they offered the Litespeed vacuum cleaner for $67. That seemed like a pretty good deal for a "bagless" vacuum cleaner and so I bought it on a whim because I was tired of constantly unclogging my current Eureka upright.
First, the basics. The Litespeed is an upright and works on both carpets and bare floors. It has 12 amps of power and does not use a bag. Instead, it has a large cup that you empty out and two filters. One of the filters requires regular cleaning and the other (a HEPA filter to prevent dust from recycling back into the room) requires replacement every 6 months. The hose unhooks from the base for hand cleaning and it comes with your standard tools (a small handheld brush, extension wand and crevice tool for small spaces. There is an extra long cord (30 ft) and a light. It needs to be assembled but the assembly was easy -- just a matter of sliding one part into another and screwing 2 screws in.
Second, the extras. The Litespeed has several nice features. The see through cup allows you to get a feeling of accomplishment every time you vacuum as you see the amount of dirt that you're collecting. Plus it lets you know when you need to empty the cup out. The handle also will lower all the way down to the floor so you can slide the whole vacuum cleaner under beds (as long as the base fits underneath). The suction is great -- but I've not used it long enough to see how it degrades over time. The hose is large so doesn't seem to clog very easily. The design of the upright makes it harder to tip -- a problem I had previously especially with young children.
Third, the downsides. Even though it glides very easily on the floor, lifting it up the stairs can be a pain as it weighs in about 20 lbs -- a little heavier than my previous Eureka. Even though there are no bags to replace, the filter in the dust cup gets dirty very often if you have fine dust particles and need to be cleaned by hand -- a messy task. I need to shake it every time I clean and every few months need to take the filter apart and wash it. Also, the HEPA filter works great (can't smell any dust at all) but can be expensive (about $20 to replace). The cup itself needs to be turned over to empty so it can be messy when emptying out. The 13 inch cleaning path is a little small -- but if you want a larger vacuum, there are similar models that come in a larger cleaning path but costs a lot more. Finally, the hose connection to the base doesn't fit very well. So everytime I want to use the hand tools, I struggle to pull the hose up from the base and than try to stick it back in the base again. Plus the hose is made of plastic so isn't made for standing on.
All in all, I got great value for my money and I'm very satisfied with my Eureka Litspeed Upright.
