Finally I get the game installed and it runs! The first thing I noticed about this game is that it takes an amazingly long time for it to load. This is mainly caused because it loads nearly all of the textures etc. etc. before it lets you play the game. There isn’t really much of a problem with this, because it gives a very realistic game, with reasonable loading times.
One other thing that I don’t really like about this game, is that it doesn’t have any form of ‘quick combat’. This annoyed me because any time I load a game for the first time, I look for instant action to decide whether I want to play the game anymore or not. This did have its advantages though. It meant that I started the campaign game (will explain all later). There is a very good introduction to the game here, teaching you everything you need to play and navigate inside the game.
I would definitely advise anyone who has time to start the game in Peacetime (you will understand if you start the game). This is where you get the very helpful introduction to flying and also to navigating the menu system, which can get a little tricky.
When you choose peacetime, you get presented with a menu for you to choose what pilots you would like to use. Choose them very carefully, because each of their statistics can affect a whole number of things. If they have a very low stamina, there is less chance of them surviving if they bail out over water until a helicopter can come and pick them up.
OK, so you’ve picked your pilots. The first thing you see is a screen with a bunch of pilots in what looks like a rest area. I found this a little confusing, but I soon caught on what was going on. The first sight of any action was when you get told that there is briefing going on with one of your pilots. I will leave the rest for you to find out when you go out and buy this game.
When you compare this game with all of the other well-known combat flight simulators, you can see just how much better it really is. There is so much more detail in this game. There are a couple of glitches with the scenery, at least on my PC there was (specs listed below). I got very sharp lines between sea and land. The only thing was when I compared this to playing it on my friends PC who lives up the road from me with an AMD Athlon 1333Mhz, GeForce 2 MX. You see that there a smooth ‘gradient’ between the sea and land.
One other thing that is generally forgot about when you talk about games, is the sound effects. I tried this game using my old SoundBlaster PCI 128, and a headset, and there is very cool 3D sound. You can tell just where every sound is coming from. I didn’t get this with my speakers, but they aren’t great either. With a set of good 3D speakers I would say there would be little that would sound better.
This game can be very addictive, but it does take a while of playing before you are likely to notice. Also I found that when playing the game on my PC, I didn’t really like it because it was a bit too many glitches. I can’t say what it is really like when you play it on a better PC.
This game probably won’t appeal to everyone, but I’m sure a lot of people would enjoy. If you like action games you will like this game.
One other note of warning though, I find it quite hard when trying to turn in the game. It is very easy to make your pilot pass-out if you try to turn too quick. This is because this game includes the ‘G-Force’ effect. How realistic are they trying to make this game? This makes me recommend that you use a joystick if you want to play this game properly. It can be played without one but with great difficulty.
I would generally not advise anything less graphics card wise to play this game.
Well I haven’t got much more to say so I guess I’ll just say I really enjoyed playing this game, and that I would basically advise you to try it. It can easily be overlooked.
