To say that Europe on a Shoestring has been my Bible for the past three weeks would be an overstatement, but it was certainly very helpful and I would recommend it for any young first-time traveller. It is a comprehensive and amusing guide which makes it not only essential but also entertaining to read (particularly on long train journeys between cities). Although now a little out of date, it provides important information on emergency numbers, exchange rates and travel in and around the cities, while also giving short, helpful reviews on various attractions, restaurants, clubs and the like. However, it may not be the right thing for those looking for places further off the beaten track, and it is a little heavy (although this can be overcome by following the example of a New Zealander we met in a hostel who had cut out the pages of the places he had visited). Overall a very useful guide :)

I inter-railed last summer and heard a lot of people talking about Lonely Planet guides, although we didn't use them when we went something like that could have been useful (i.e. when my friend lost his passport! *sighs*). Hope you had a great time if you're been inter-railing over the last 3 weeks anyway. Nice review.
