Everybody Wants Some (DVD)

Everybody Wants Some (DVD)

I watched this movie around six months ago, streaming it from Amazon as it was "free" to watch under Amazon Prime. I have enjoyed other college based movies such as the house bunny, The Breakfast Club, Porkys, Grease, Animal House, Pitch Perfect, American Pie and the Perks of Being a Wallflower. It's a relateable genre and one that is easy viewing with a few giggles thrown in.

First impressions
This is a 2016 film although it is set in the early 80s. It is a certificate 15. The title is actually "Everybody Wants Some!!" and I find the exclamations quite unnecessary. When I was watching it, I really did not know this film was only a year old and I honestly believed and felt that it was an older movie which is quite remarkable as you can usually tell by the quality of the footage.

What they say
Following the acclaimed Boyhood, nominated for six Academy Awards, Richard Linklater returns with Everybody Wants Some, a spiritual sequel to his 1993 breakthrough, Dazed & Confused.

Set in the world of 1980s college life, Everybody Wants Some follows a freshman’s first weekend at college, experiencing a fraternity-like lifestyle with his hard partying teammates as they navigate their way through the freedoms and responsibilities of unsupervised adulthood.

A bit about...
The housemates all have sports in common, namely baseball. The film covers the first weekend, meeting each other, looking for girls, meeting the coach, breaking his house rules and holding a house party which is pretty typical and very entertaining. The freshmen settle in to their first week before lectures begin and just enjoy party after party in different genres and a few nightclubs causing trouble and drama as they go along.

There are lots of different types of people from the quiet cowboy Billy to the person we mainly follow in the film. There are a few girls in it but the main focus is on the guys in the baseball team. You can pick out the 'types' of boy which make for interesting viewing.

Who is in it?
Blake Jenner as Jake Bradford
Zoey Deutch as Beverly
Glen Powell as Finnegan "Finn"
Tyler Hoechlin as Glen McReynolds
Ryan Guzman as Kenny Roper
Wyatt Russell as Charlie Willoughby
Temple Baker as Tyrone Plummer
J. Quinton Johnson as Dale Douglas
Will Brittain as Billy "Beuter" Autrey
Juston Street as Jay Niles
Forrest Vickery as Coma
Tanner Kalina as Alex Brumley
Austin Amelio as Nesbit
Michael Monsour as Justin
Jonathan Breck as Coach Gordan
Dora Madison Burge as Val

My overall thoughts
I appreciated the retro style of this movie and it really felt authentic, it certainly fooled me when I watched it as I had no idea it was released in 2016. The clothes, cars, house, furnishing all felt right in line with the era.

This is a film where, actually, not a lot happens. For them, the boys they are totally entering their time, coming of age, privileged sportsmen who are top of their game in their home towns find themselves to be of average ability at college. Their house is a typical shared home with everyone desperate to prove themselves in their new world. Vulnerable, cocky, assured, weak, strong and unsure of themselves, they use their first few days at college to establish their claim on the world.

There are some great music numbers included in the soundtrack of this film. From My Sharona to Heart of Glass they are all in-keeping with the times of this film.

Price and availability
This film is free to watch on Prime or you can buy the DVD outright for under £5.

Final word
I probably won't watch this again but for the first time viewing, it did not disappoint. It was not outrageously rude, it did try to have a flow and was not endless rude jokes so I felt it had a good balance to it. As I said earlier, really not a lot happens but it was a decent couple of hours viewers with no extreme storyline or cliff hangers. Would I recommend? Yes if you don't need too much action... the title suggests comedy but that is not really what you get.
