I've foundered in the fog of indecision too long and finally foreclosed the inertia. Floating late and nebulous in the ether, the response to the purebitch challenge of long, long ago. Like the elephant, I never forget. The a to z of my remembered existence.
A. For Africa. I was lucky in some ways as a child to go to West Africa and experience some of the wonders there. Diverse kinds of people from tribes and religious backgrounds, exuberance and energy. The gigantic wildness of surf crashed beaches, teaming screaming jungles. Colourful insects and animals. B. For ballet.. Through Martha Graham and Laban, the mirrored rehearsal rooms once took me as far as Nureyev's Sleeping Beauty for ten days. (As an Extra) I watch the world ballet scene with awe. C. For Christmas.. The wine pours and the blood flows, they kill and they hunt, they carouse and they laugh, it puts me right off religion. Turkeys are part of a hideous blood sacrifice. D. Dylan. (Robert Zimmerman) Whose poetry and music seldom fails to cut me to the quick. E. Esperanto. The manufactured language invented by Zamenhof that helped me communicate with people all over the world. If I wasn't so lazy I'd make myself an expert. F. Friends. Very difficult to find sometimes, impossible to keep at others, cherished if ever established. G. Govinda. One of the names of the dancing, flute playing Hindu god Krishna that fascinated me so much once I danced down Oxford Street banging bells and selling magazines. H. Holidays. Personally I never get one of these, not in the sense of going anywhere special any more. It's still nice to get off work for a bit and try to be free. I. Ink. I like drawing with black ink. A nice fine line from a dip in pen or a posh graded one. To represent something there, following the contours in space, or to create whatever it might be needs to be created from the depths of the mind. J. Jay Jay Wilson, who came out of nowhere to offer me collaboration with his frank, direct poetry writing and a book "Earth Beauty " was born. K. Karaoke. Never thought I would like it but now I can see the potential and seek to develop it. L. London was that big sloppy dirty place us school kids hitched to on week ends. Slept in Trafalgar square, looked for clothes up Kings Road, went to the Marquee Club and the all night discotheque. It's still there, they tell me. M. Mopeds. I had a Tomos Moped once. A fine machine that served me well for two years. 49 cc's of solid power. They don't make them like that any more. N. Neurasthenia. What Gerard Manley Hopkins the poet priest was said to die of. Extreme depression. I know how he must have felt sometimes. "Are you grieving…" O. Om. The first sound. The primal vibration. A focus for meditation. Used as a peace symbol. P. Pratchet, Terry, creator of Discworld who has succeeded in cheering me up. Q. Quintessence. A seventies Krishna Rock group who had style and philosophy. R. Rome. Passed through there a couple of times. Looked quite Italian and pretty good. S. Singing. All kinds of ways of doing this, a kind of communication, release and harmonising with the great universe. T. T Mobile. My first mobile. U. Union. Attempting to work together and improve working conditions. V. Van Morrison. Saw him in Aberystwyth a few years ago. Brilliant. 'V' is also for veganism, the caring way to organise a lifestyle. W. Wales. Land of My Fathers. Original Celtic fields of ancient lore. X. For the X Files, innovative sci-fi. Y. For yesterday, wherever it went. Z. For Zen in the art of everything.
