‘DUST MITE'

Guess what they not insects, not parasites but wait for this they are related to spiders! Yep, you guess it! They are DUST MITES!

These mites are so small that under the microscope they are hairy eight legged creatures, they are invisible to the human eyes and about 0.3 mm in length. They are oval shaped, with no eyes, they have mouthpart in front of body and have a transparent shell that makes them look and feel terror! They really look like they are hurry around and over one another.

They are found in all homes and if you think you got the cleanest house in the area, well you are in for a shock!

These mites live in dust, about half a teaspoon contains as many as 1,000-dust mites! Imagine that!

These dust mites collect in upholstery, carpet, mattresses, beddings and fabrics. Their main inhabitation is in our home and they really do love the bedrooms because the conditions are right for them. They feed on food and warmth for their growth; they eat our dead skin cells and from pets which incidentally makes up for 70-80% of dust. When we perspire and breathe that is equivalent to 1 pint for each person. They live on the vapour that we produce.

But of course if they eat they have to get rid of their waste so what happens? Hah! wait for this, that same gram of dust holds around 250,000 or more of their poo that acts like missiles! They produces 20 feces pellets per day and wait for it -----yep this is 200 times its body weight in poo poo during its brief life! , you imagine too, these millions of dust mites living with us in our beds as we toss and turn, their droppings are everywhere from the beddings to the air! Just thinks of many poo poos they do and we inhale them, gets into our airways and cause allergic reaction!

Because of their bathroom habits, it accounts to why people get some forms of allergy or bronchial asthma, itch or wheeze, the symptoms are in the respiratory; at the time of doing this project, some patients did have red rashes around the neck, although this was not clear. These mites can cause life long problems in allergy in infants,

There is really no cure, but preventions can be a safer way, there are many measures one can use, but the basic ones are
Do not lie on the rug, remember this is where they live also, you will breathe in dust and find if you are asthmatic; their chemical reaction coming from their bowels can become severe, and may cause asthma attack.
Try to avoid pets who have fur or feathers, of course I do appreciate that there are many pet lovers, but you need to establish sleeping habits as far away from yours.
Vinyl floors or hardwood is good.
Use a good air filter
Keep the house clean regularly
Keep humidity levels below 45-60%
Use a good vacuum cleaner.

Now you know what is it that makes us suffer from allergy!

Very interesting, a great op! Thanks for all the facts. I already knew they were everywhere, but I try not to think about them too much! (Yuck!) :) Sarah
