{There are more relevant places to post this, but because of Ciao's "one strike and you're out " policy, I can't go there again. I do find it ever-so-slightly incredible that we can only post once on a given topic.}
So R is for Reading, and R is for Rating . . .
There are guidelines.
They are there for all to see.
So I’m not entirely sure why a How to Read and Rate topic should exist.
Either you read and rate in accordance with the guidelines of Ciao, or you create your own reading/rating agenda.
Okay, it is now clear I am going to offend some people. But I will only offend those with a guilty conscience.
HINTS AND TIPS FOR NEWBIE CIAOERS.
Mega Hint 1 – Make a mental list of Ciao’s most trusted members, rate (VH, obviously), their most recent op, and unless you are a complete plonker, you will get an automatic VH in return.
Mega Hint 2 - Submit an opinion and do nothing. Just wait. Ciao’s most trusted will descend upon you like vultures, vying with one another with their welcoming comments in your guestbook or the comment thread on your op.
Mega Hint 3 – Attack is better than defence, so instead of waiting to see what reads and rates your opinion gets, get out there, and lodge a few indiscriminate VH’s. You don’t have to waste your time actually reading the opinion. Few of the most trusted ever read an opinion. Just get there in as slow a time as it takes, to outwit the “An Opinion Must Be Read in Full” monster.
LIES, DAMN LIES, AND . . .
Sorry, but . . .
You will recall, I hope, that some time ago, Aspen was so anti-league tables, statistics, etc, that he, ermmm, f*cked off for a while. In fact, trying to be objective, Aspen was probably second only to cujimmy (who?), in his depth of protest.
But it came to pass.
And now, Caio, like the humble servant of the Blairite Govt. (abbreviated, ‘cos that’s all they’re worth), has espoused the view that league tables are the be-all and end-all of life itself.
And I would never have written this, nor indeed anything like it, had statistics not come to rule this website.
. . . STATISTICS
It is a sad, but inarguable fact, that if you want to be a Most Trusted member of Ciao, you have to be dishonest. You have be first to find new contributors, and welcome them to Ciao, and rate their dubious offerings VH.
The honest members who come behind, and rate H or FH, even though they leave an explanation, know exactly how they will be seen in the eyes of that newbie member. Because, after all, they’ve already had a VH from one of the top trusted members.
And the facts are – Of the three most trusted members (and I still think the league tables are shite), none has given less than 78.2% VH rating. Sorry, but in my humble opinion, 78% of offerings to Ciao are not of VH standard.
Furthermore, of the top three most trusted, UH’s account for only 1.5% - yes only one point five – of their ratings.
And sorry again, but I wish – yes, I WISH – only 1.5% of submissions to this site were unhelpful.
YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE
And I know I have upset certain friends. But it has to be said.
Any one of us can give a VH to 80% of all the opinions we read, and leave a cute little “Welcome to the Site” comment.
But doing so does not help Ciao. It does not help the Newbie member. It helps only one person.
And that is so f*cking selfish, you should be ashamed of yourselves, whoever you are.
Hi Aspen, thanks for the VH...oh dear..*shite* eh?Lol..gulp. I must be in your range of remarks 'cos I mostly rate Vh (unless it's REALLY bad-with an explanation why, when I rate UH FH etc.) AND,- oh dear again,I leave 'welcomes to ciao' to newbies wherever I go, too(!)not 'cos I'm a creeping 2 faced slime ball, but sincerely remember the elitism and difficulty of being a newbie meself! plus,as anyone that knows me well, hun, will know I'm one of these hideous people called far from up her own back side 'polite and gentle'-can't bear rackets of war..no siree! (chortle..)Brilliant op.(not slime suckingly nice 'cos I'm selfish, you understand!lol.)chrissie xx

Schmuck that I am, I never manage to follow Mega Hint Three. Once one starts reading an opinion (and I do mean an opinion - I almost entirely focus on the cafe sector - not just a product review) it's almost impossible not to get interested in how the person thinks, and how they put their thoughts across. I even read ever word of this one, despite having see MH3 half way through. Must try harder.
Advantages: It is claimed that it will redress the ethnicity balance Disadvantages: Simply reversing the situation that the race relations act was brought in to combat
