This book follows the story an orphaned child who has been running wild and getting into trouble with the police as he is adopted by his grandmother and carted off to a strange and remote town away from the cities and from trouble. He finds himself in a tiny little village full of elderly and weird people with strange traditional values. He soon realises the village is not as it seems and plans to run away. He gets caught up in a dark magic plot by the residents of the town to release great evil from bindings within the earth and he is required as part of the ritual. Although this book has all the makings of a terrifying thriller in some way it doesnt fulfill its potential. The plot and twists are fantastic and keep you hooked although the style is simple and monotonous although the ending is a brilliant culmination of all the scary and spooky events. The book is well worth reading for 10-13 year olds and is great as a bedtime read. However another good book for readers of the same age is Horrowitz horrers a collection of terrifying tales that will keep you awake all night I bought this book at WHSmiths for £6.99 however there will now be many cheaper online options and one of the cheapest places is on the web at amazon.co.uk for £4.99 but im sure that if you wanted to buy it cheaper you could buy it second hand for as little as a pound.
The characters: thought this book was really good. The descriptions of the characters were so real you could relate to them. The only bad thing was the fact it was quite confusing and fast paced in places.
Advantages: Exciting, intriguing Disadvantages: a little far - fetched.
...is to destroy the evil "old ones". He has to do this by closing their link to the world, Raven's gate.
The book is quite exciting, but a bit far-fetched for the setting of modern day life. It is enjoyable when you get into it but I don't think it has the same flair as the Alex Rider books by the same author. I would recommend it to girls or boys of about 10 to 16, although some adults might enjoy it. There is nothing unsuitable for younger readers. ...

Advantages: Great characters , creates a strong feeling of empathy Disadvantages: Failed in all other Aspects
I found this audiobook rather disappointing after its prequel 'Ravens Gate' which was a truly invigorating audiobook, this audiobook did not pull me in to it in the way that great audiobooks do, so this suggests that it was not a great audiobook. The book contains very likeable characters and it also eminates a strong sense of empathy but in most other aspects it fails to be a good audiobook and i do not think it is worth buying as an audio book ...

Advantages: Great fantasy read Disadvantages: Need to have read the first
This is a book for anyone who likes a bit of Fantasy. It's an incredible story with bits from loads of different bits of fantasy. And what's more it doesn't have a cheery ending. This is the book that sets up the rest of the series and I can't wait to read the rest. It starts of with Matt Freeman, hero of the first book, being sent to Peru to stop a second gate from being opened. There he faces unimaginable danger and meets the second of the five. ...

Advantages: Inculcates imaginative and creativity in children. Disadvantages: An imitation of Dan Brown's style of turning allies to enemies
...The Power of Five - Evil Star is the second book in this series by Horowitz, who has set the book in our world in this time, unlike a lot of other books of this type that rely on you believing in other planets or time dimensions. There are traitors and thieves at every turn and Matt ends up alone in Peru with no passport and no one he can trust
I recommend this book to people over the age of ten because I feel it is too advanced for young readers ...

Advantages: You meet all different worlds with a great plot ` Disadvantages: Not as scary as you thought
Nightrise is a novel by AnthonyHorowitz, and is the third book in "The power of five" series, after "EvilStar" and "Raven's Gate".
Unlike the two books preceding it, this book follows Scott and Jamie Tyler, telepathic twins. I find this strange to have two of the five in one book, because it was one per book in the other two.
Although the book is about both Jamie and Scott, Scott plays only a very small role, and speaks even less (15 lines at the most), but that may be due to the fact he was kidnapped (always helps people say less).
I find this book to be less scary and supernatural than the other two, which is strange, because the front cover looks very evil (but don't judge a book by it's cover).
In this book, the timeline starts to get a little confusing, especially as there are actually three worlds that the story takes ...
