This is the story of Matt, whose parents died in a car crash which he avoided because of his psychic powers. He lives with his aunt, who adopts him for the money, and gradually gets into bad company and eventually is arrested for stealing.
He is put on the LEAF program to rehabilitate troubled youngsters in the countryside, and moves to a village where he gradually reallises that there is something very wrong with his guardian and the whole village. He is drawn into a world of mystery and magic and discovers that his destiny is to destroy the evil "old ones". He has to do this by closing their link to the world, Raven's gate.
The book is quite exciting, but a bit far-fetched for the setting of modern day life. It is enjoyable when you get into it but I don't think it has the same flair as the Alex Rider books by the same author.
I would recommend it to girls or boys of about 10 to 16, although some adults might enjoy it. There is nothing unsuitable for younger readers.
