When a film is written, produced, directed and starred in by one man, you get an idea that it may be a low budget smalltime movie. And in this case you would be right for assuming. However, there are many films that ar far from Hollywood blockbusters and yet still hold your attention throughout. The Dummy sits on the line for this one with a mix of funny and entertaining scenes as well as some pretty poorly acted ones. The acting quality ranges drastically throughout and features some actors who seem as if they might get somewhere half decent and others that seem to just be friends of the the director. The story is simpl and has been heard before in lots of films ecpecially budget ones. A guy's dummy starts to kill people. That's it. Not much else happens. Last summer I finally treated myself to a new digital SLR camera. I really love photography and want to improve so an SLR seemed the way to go. After a lot of research I finally chose the Canon 400D. Having bought my new camera I wanted to be able to get the best from it. I am no expert when it comes to cameras so wanted a book that would treat me gently and assume that I am a bit of a novice. Looking on Amazon for books aimed at my specific camera I was happy to find that the" for dummies" series had a book especially for the Canon 400D. Like many books on Amazon this book was a lot less that the cover price of £19.99, I think I paid about half price but can't remember exactly how much.

With influences including the likes of Billie Holiday, Edith Piaf, Otis Reading and Nina Simone it doesn't take a genius to understand Gibbons' leaning to soul in her work with Portishead. What does come as a shock though is the way she presents that soul which defies her looks being one which could easily pass for a mid 30's, middle class woman living on the right side of town and doing Brunch at John Lewis. Gibbons' voice on Dummy is breathy, breathless at times and at many junctures so raw and overcoming that you can hear her bitter sweet vocals against the distinct backdrop of dry lips parting and lungs reeling back the air to feed the next tortured line of the track.
