Advantages Keeps your cables and wires neat and tidy
Disadvantages May be a bit of a problem to stick on uneven walls
Two months ago we had new windows and doors fitted on out house, this resulted in a bit of re decorating and re routing cables and wires, why are sockets never in the right place? I had never been happy with the cables just tacked around frames and along the skirting boards but its one of those job we just didn't seem to get round to until now.
We wanted the wires to look neat and tidy but also we wanted something we would be able to do ourselves, my Dad suggested getting some plastic trunking, its not too expensive and easy to use. We went to a local DIY store and bought some Excel Maxi Trunking.
Trunking is simply a white plastic covering that keeps all your cables neat and tidy. The cables or wires sit inside a 3 sided box that attaches to your wall. It has a snap on cover so all wires are totally encased in a little plastic square. The trunking comes with double sided tape attached to the back of it so there's no need for drilling the wall or doorframe you simply stick it on.
We bought our trunking in 2 meter lengths, the actual size was 2meters x 5cm'sx 5cm's, other sizes are available too. The prices ranges from approximately £5-8 for a 2 meter length depending on size and where you buy it from. Most DIY stores sell it.
We found fitting the trunking reasonably easy, cutting it to size wasn't a problem, we just used a small saw. Once cut to size you simply need to remove the top off the trunking, peel the backing from the double sided tape and stick into position, its probably advisable to double check your measurements and where its actually going before you stick it because once in place the double sided tape really grips the wall.
Once you have stuck your tunking on place all you need to do is place the wire or cables inside and click the lid into place as you go along. If you are going around window or door frames or any corner you can buy little corner pieces which will join the trunking and guide the cable around the corner neatly.
The nice thing about using this is that if you need to move anything or something breaks you can just unclip the top of the trunking, take that one cable out then clip it back on again without disturbing anything.
If you are looking for a way to neaten up wires and cables going around your room then I would definitely recommend looking into getting some excel trunking, its so easy to fix and doesn't require any drilling to the wall. The only time you may have a problem with the double sided tape method is if your walls are very uneven, this may prove a bit of a problem but generally the tape should be fine.
We put our trunking just along the top of the skirting board which is white so it blended in really well. Its neat and tidy and eliminates unsightly wires from being draped around the edge of the carpet or tacked around doorframes. Most of us have lots of electrical appliances around the home that come with a lot of cable and wires, this is a good easy way to keep them out of sight, accessible and tidy.
