Foreign Students - how to be a Host with the Most!
Advantages: A great opportunity to meet people from all over the world Disadvantages: Pay isn't great
...of my home. The Folkestone School of English Studies (SES) is by far the most professional of the three in my opinion, (more of which later) and for the past year has been a fairly constant source of students for us to play host to.
The obvious advantages of being a host family are: 1) The extra money. OK, it's not brilliant, but every little helps! It pays around £175 per fortnight for adults and slightly more for under 18s. For this, you provide ... ...saying no, but surely the school could have found her a hotel which has the resources she needed? And I am not a qualified, or even experienced carer, so I felt this would be most unfair all round.
In conclusion, welcoming foreign students into your home can be an enriching and rewarding experience. My small daughter is increasingly aware of different cultures and languages by having so many different nationalities in her home. There are also some ...

AIESEC UK HOT TO GO!
Advantages: Everything Disadvantages: Organisation is hard to quantify
...idea, the founding members of AIESEC started to build the organisation between the years of 1946-1948. Their clear identity later established at the Stockholm Congress of 1949. They defined their goal as 'to ascertain the peace and fulfilment of humankinds potential', and set about it through exchange.
*Building the steps*
The first exchange was done in 1949 where 89 students embarked on an exchange. Not only did this signify a belief in the system, ... ...places joined the network, bringing AIESEC to universities on all continents. *Climbing up*
The success of the program was astonishing; for example, 2467 exchanges were achieved by the end of 1960. That number almost double to 4232 at the end of the next decade.
Other methods were also introduced to fortify their program. For example, seminars were first introduced as part of trainees' reception experiences, in a proposal from AIESEC in Germany ...

Summer work experience for science students!!!
Advantages: Gaining valuable experience, and getting to travel as well! Disadvantages: You have to pay for your flights, so think carefully about your destination!
The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE) is a world wide set up incorporating over 80 countries. The aim of the program is to organise placements for students studying for science or technical degrees such as Physics, Engineering, Computer Science and many many others. Students are usually expected to have completed at least two years of their relevant degree before taking up a placement.
THE PLACEMENTS
... ...extend up to a year. The large majority of these take place during the summer holiday, but there is often planty of flexibility. Each country will have a host/reception comittee which will usually organise any accomodation required and try to provide social events for the visiting students. These comittees are often run by groups of students who are studying in the area and are either planning to, or have been on placements themselves. In my experience, ...

Excellent time - and really useful!
Advantages: Great experience, horizon-broadening. Disadvantages: Perhaps food, but there were plenty of other places to eat.
...over two years ago with Acorn Educational exchanges. I was part of a group of about thirty students all studying A-level French. We stayed in an excellent FUAJ youth hostel there which was very conmfortable, although the food left a lot to be desired, but it was cheap so you couldn't complain. Acorn placed each student in a business in the town so that they could get language experience working there. To be honest, I did very little work where I ... ...to the customers, and learnt a few words that I probably shouldn't have! I would recommend this company to any student studying a language for A level. The work was inportant, of course, but I made some very good friends from the group was there and had a wonderful time. ...

Excellent business/cultural exchange programme for schools/colleges
Advantages: Only £100 per school, IT, import/export, student exchanges etc Disadvantages: You have to be at school or college to take part (is that a disadvntage?)
Achievers International is a unique programme offered to school and college students of all ages. Every school who joins is given a partner school in a foreign country. The groups of students set up a mini company and communicate regularly with their partner by e-mail, fax and video-conferencing. The student companies conduct market research to find out which products they could sell to their partner school. Once a decision has been made and orders ...
