Released in Europe on February 16th, Excite Truck is arguably the best driving game available on the Wii to date. It's the spiritual successor to the Excitebike series, and if you ask me, is a great game to play if you like fun, 'pick up and play' sort of games.
Best described as an even more extreme version of Burnout, Excite Truck has you racing over 20 different sorts of 4x4 vehicles (yeah, I can hear you Eco-friendlies moaning in the back!) across the deserts of Mexico, the hills of Scotland, the Great Wall of China, the snowy tundra of Finland, the fields of Canada and the beautiful beaches of Fiji. Each country has it's own style, and at times, the game looks absolutely gorgeous.
Controlling the game is very easy, but it might take you a few minutes to get used to the tilt function. To play, you hold the Wiimote on it's side, with the directional pad on the left, and the 1 and 2 buttons on the right. The 2 button is your accelerator, 1 your brake/reverse, and the directional pad activates your Boost (more on that in a minute). To turn your vehicle, you have to tilt the wiimote to the right or left, depending on which way you want to go. The harder you tilt, the tighter the turn your vehicle will make. At first, I kept thinking the directional pad was turn, a la any normal racing game, but after a few minutes, I got the controls nailed.
Upon playing the game for the first time, you're asked to create a profile, and complete a couple of tutorial sessions. These ease you gently into the game, introducing a new technique or way of control with each tutorial. These are mandatory, and cannot be skipped, but are well worth it, and relatively easy to get right first time. There are 4 tutorials in total, and I definitely recommend you do all 4 before starting the main game, as they help greatly.
The main goal in Excite Truck is not only to win, but to win with style. Excite Truck is fast, it's Extremely fast, with a capitol E. You vehicle has a boost function, but overusing it leads to your engine getting too hot, so it's important to keep it cool by driving over water or getting airborne. Nearly everything you do whilst racing earns you stars, which are collected by smashing your opponents vehicles, drifting around corners, getting airborne, or by crashing (which you'll be doing a lot of!). Every track has numerous jumps you can drive off, bodies of water to drive over, or trees to drive through. The longer you stay in the air or drift, or the harder you smash into your opponents, the more stars you earn.
Dotted around the Tracks are 'Track Morph' icons. Driving through one of these morphs the terrain somehow, normally the ground will morph into a huge jump, or parts of the terrain such as walls or even buildings will start falling down. On one level, you can even start a volcano! Driving over these icons at the right can prove fatal to your opponents, and work very well in your favour. Also available, but rarer, are 'Power' icons. Driving through on of these grants you vehicle invincibility for a period of time, so you can plough through whole forests, and vastly increases your speed. These are great if you're behind the pack and need to catch up quickly. Also, every track has numerous shortcuts, even if it means ploughing through trees, or flying straight over your opponents.
So you've done the Tutorials, what's open to you? First of all is 'Excite Mode', a Grand Prix-esque mode. There are 4 cups; Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum, which are unlocked in their turn. You have to race 6 other racers around tracks, collecting stars as you race. To unlock the next cup, you have to collect a certain amount of stars in each level. Once you've completed the race, you're given a grade, and can choose to retry, or move on to the next race. The cups get gradually more difficult, but they're never too hard.
Also available is the Challenge Mode, which consists of 3 different games; Gate, Ring and Crush. In Gate, you have to drive through 100 gates, making sure you don't run out of time. Ring has you trying to get as much air as possible, and try to fly though the rings. Crush, as you've probably already guessed, is a Crash-Up Derby, but with 4x4s with turbos. There's 2 tracks for each mode, which certainly feels a little short, but Gate and Ring will push you to your whit's end. Crush however, is far too easy, you'll get the S ranks for those in no time whatsoever.
There's also a 2 player split screen mode, but the computer doesn't take part, which is a pity. The tracks feel a little empty with only 2 racers on them, but it's pretty good fun all the same. 4 player support would be nicer though.
The Records section tracks all your fastest times, best stunts and Single Player achievements ie. X 5 star Drifts etc. Sadly, there's no option to enter a name after getting a high score, and no way of comparing multiple accounts' high scores without writing down scores and loading up the other account. This could definitely have been improved on.
So, Excite Truck is fast, good looking, and most importantly, great fun to play. But, it's not all good. There are quite a few gripes I have with this game. Read on...
Remember I told you there are 2 difficulty levels for Excite and Challenge Mode. That's all well and good, but unlocking the harder difficulty takes the proverbial biscuit. You'd think after passing every race to a good enough standard would unlock the next difficulty setting, but oh no, Excite Truck likes to kick you when you're down. You HAVE to get S ranks on every race before the next difficulty is unlocked. Now that my readers is what I call cheap. The game isn't that hard, but to make you do this in order to progress is the cheapest way to add longevity to the title, ever. It's nearly enough to make you put the game down. If it wasn't so much fun firing your turbo powered Jeep over 300 metres, I'd have given up a long time ago.
My next problem I have with this game is the bloody awful soundtrack. Imagine the worst ever guitar music. It's worse. The in game music was piped direct from Satan's arsehole. Thankfully, if you have an SD Card and some songs in MP3 format, you can listen to those whilst playing. I wholeheartedly suggest you do this, because the in game music is horrible, but, sadly that's not all. The vehicles sound absolutely horrible. They whine and buzz, but never roar. It's embarrassing. A racing game where the vehicles sound like washing machines.
Finally, just to rub salt into the wound, the game isn't even that long. If you bought it Saturday morning, you'll have finished it in time for Sunday dinner. That's if you're willing to get S ranks on absolutely everything.
One of the game's saving graces though is how often something new is unlocked. New vehicles are unlocked after completing X races, no matter how far into the game you've gone, and Trophies are awarded for doing X amount of 5 star drifts/air time/smashes or S ranks.
So, in short, Excite Truck is nice to play, looks very lovely, and is great fun. Sadly, it's short, the soundtrack is horrible, and is quite sadistic in how it makes you get S ranks to go any further. Do I recommend you purchase the game? No. Do I recommend you play the game? Yes, very much so.
A rental it is then!

Advantages: Superfast playability, making great use of wii controller Disadvantages: Been seen before on other consoles
In Excite Truck from Monster games, the goal is ultimate carnage. Participating in global races, you are actually rewarded for the most amount of damage you create.
With Wii owners currently snapping up the latest version of Mario Kart to be released for the format, it's good to see an example of how enjoyable an arcade type race game can be. I wasn't disappointed. Although it took zero inspiration to come up with the name, it can't be denied that ... ...on the next level.

You start on the most basic tracks (bronze level) in different countries, and differing weather conditions, competing against five others. You have to unlock the silver, gold and platinum race events by getting a minimum number of gold stars from each track you compete on. You get more stars, the more adventurous you are with your truck, and also from the higher the position that you finish. Stars come by taking ...

Advantages: Go out and rent the dang game. It's a lot of fun Disadvantages: Extremely short. Levels could have used some more diversity.
Excite Truck is the sequel to the 1985 classic Excitebike. Yeah, you're right, it is a lot different than the NES game. Heck, it's like saying that Madden NFL 2007 is the sequel to a little game that came out the same month and year as Excitebike by the name of Baseball. There is almost nothing that is similar to Excitebike in this, other than the fact that you catch a lot of air. It feels like they had the game developed and just tacked the name ... ...hit something at all times. Excite Truck, if it weren't for some major downfalls, could have been one superb racer. It's really too bad that it isn't what it could have been, but the game is still a lot of fun, but its a pretty much worthless purchase.
Story you ask? Well, like many other racing games, this game just consists of some races to complete in which you can replay to get better times. When you're done with those races you've technically ...

I recently purchased excite truck from my local Game, I paid 34.99 and now after reading other reviews wish I'd been to gamestation and found it for 19.99! Never mind though you live and learn.

Advantages: Pick up and Play, Good Fun. Nice track design. Disadvantages: Slightly limited, Generic Rock Music
Excite Truck is by far the best racing game on the Wii which is not too high praise as it does not have much competition but it is also one of the best game of any genre currently on the console.
It is basically a pick up and play arcade style racing game. The most unique aspect of the game is how you control the cars. You use only the Wiimote and hold it length ways between both hands like it is a steering wheel. Then to go left you move your hands ... ...and you move from the Excite level to Super Excite.
You get a rating for each race depending on how many stars you get. The maximum being S. Once you have gotten the maximum S rating in each race at Super Excite level you get a mirror mode which adds to the longevity of the game.
The best aspect of the game is really the fun you have playing it. As you try to do spins and jumps and take out opponents. The tracks are designed superbly and a have ...

Advantages: Involving environments, beautiful graphics, great controls Disadvantages: Not many tracks, frame rate suffers in multiplayer
Excite Truck was one of the very first Wii games I ever bought, at the recommendation of a friend. It's a very complete racing package, with a great control scheme that now almost every racing game uses.
Single player is incredibly fun, the graphics are beautiful and the environments are vast and can be altered. Activating certain powerups changes the race "track" to raise mountains or flood areas, which makes it feel more challenging and fun, and ... ...also fun. There is no online play, however playing with your mates feels brilliant, and pulling off dirty moves such as smashing into your opponent's truck to throw them off can feel so rewarding. However, the frame rate suffers horribly in multiplayer, which can make the game feel a lot less immersing.
Great buy! I encourage you to get a copy, although perhaps you should wait until it shows up second hand. ...

interested in playing games before. Due mainly to the innovative control scheme. As the wireless Wiimote allows you to interact with the screen by simple holding the Wiimote like a TV remote control and the sensor bar picks up the movements you make with it. Meaning it can be used like a Baseball bat, sword, steering wheel etc basically anything the imagination of the games developers can come up with.
My Mum who is in her 40's is now a big Wii fan and will often be wanting games of Wii sports or her current personal favorite of 'Cow Racing' as she calls it on Wii play.
The Wii also has games for the more serious gamer such as Zelda Twilight Princess, Red Steel, The Godfather Blackhand edition and my current personal favorite 'ExciteTruck' to name just a few which all make good and different use of the Wiimote control method.

or player profiles all your online activity is done using your Wii's identification, so you can't use a friends Wii and sign-in, like you can on the 360, also the virtual console is region specific, Europe, American and Japan have their own Virtual Console. But these are really the only faults that come to mind and don't hamper you in any major way.
The console is being backed with a very strong launch line-up. Zelda Twilight Princess being the obvious one, Red Steel is also a great introduction to first person shooter games on the Wii, and Rayman and Super Monkey Ball are great party game choices. And with Warioware and ExciteTruck due out in the new year the Wii has some great choice games very early.
So overall it's a sleek and stylish console, easy to navigate and packed full of features, the graphics aren't going to wow anyone but ...

Controlling the vehicles in "Mario Kart Wii" - which has not only karts, but also motorcycles - promises to be intuitive. As in "ExciteTruck", you must hold the control in horizontal and turn it like a steering wheel - also, the game will come with the steering wheel accessory, a shell-shaped steering wheel, where the Wii Remote is embedded. Rotate the control quickly the vehicle will skid to Sharp - and probably from these "DRIFTS" should be possible to resume at high speed, as the predecessors.
In graphics, the title promises fantastic animations and visual effects across the colored routes including water and pyrotechnic explosions. One of the innovations are radical moves that can be implemented with the karts (a spin of 360, for example) and motorcycles (tilt). Such stunts worth bonus for the executor, but no ...
In the grand racing tradition of Excitebike®, get ready for a big-air experience like no other as players rocket their trucks across dynamically changing terrain.
Features:
Remember tilting your arms while playing Excitebike to try to make your character land a huge jump? Well, that experience is finally a reality with Excite Truck, a wild, off-road race only possible on Nintendo's Wii console.
Players hold the Wii Remote like an NES® controller to control the truck. The 2 button is the accelerator, the 1 button is the brake, the + Control Pad is the turbo - but that's just the beginning. Tilt the Wii Remote right and left like a steering wheel to steer. Once the truck goes airborne, tilt the Wii Remote every which way to line up perfect landings for turbo boosts.
Pick up items on the courses to make the terrain deform in real time, turning innocent bumps into massive launch pads that affect not only the player's route, but that of his or her rivals. Players jump and bump their way to the highest score and highest finish.
