This is quite a comfortable novel. It is true Science Fiction but it is not as far out as some books I have read in the genre. It is a book I would happily suggest that a dabbler in SF might read. It has a normal lead character. He starts out as a student at UCLA, and through an accident needs to flee Earth.
Like a number of SF books I have read, this near future is one where most people do not work and are supported by a working minority. However, this differs in that it is by no means as dark a future portrayed as you may find elsewhere.
If you have enjoyed reading the books the Pournelle co-authored with Larry Niven then I suggest you try his solo writing, and this is not a bad one.
