We all hear about credit scoring and credit files all the time.
In these days of consumer lending, mortgages, credit cards, store cards, personal loans, HP's and more scarily ''identity theft''
I think it pays to be extra vigilant.
I thought I would take the opportunity to share with you my experiance of Identity theft and how Experian really provided a great service.
I wont bore you with all the details of the identity theft because thats not the issue here but will just ask you to be very careful.
Basically I moved house, new people moved in and Ace cards and gifts issued a catologue to my old address in my name. New people purchased goods, took delivery ,then denied all knowledge. 2 years later i realised i had a default on my credit file. I was Horrified.
How many of you have been told to send a £2 cheque to Experian and someone will send you a copy of a credit report that will mean absolutley nothing to you several weeks down the line??
With sheer frustration I turned to my trusty PC and began to plow through the internet searching for my problem of ''Identity theft''
quite accidently i came across Experian's website.
www. creditexpert.co.uk.
Reluctantly I clicked into the web expecting the usual send a £2 chq blar blar blar.
But no.... they now have a new way of accessing your credit details
you have to pay (but what dont you have to pay for) £49.00 for a year. A bit expensive if you have never had a problem but worth every penny if you feel someone may be using your details fraudulentley.
They take your credit/debit card details for £49.00 obviously using a secure site then email you within minutes with your loggin details. You can then log straight onto your very own credit report. NO WAITING WEEKS FOR A PIECE OF PAPER THAT MEANS NOTHING!
Its a very easy site to work around and everything is explained simply to those of us that do not know all the credit jargon.
once I found the piece of discriminating information sat there like a sore thumb, I simply clicked to advised I didnt agree with the infomation. This then took me to a complaint form that I filled in on line with the reasons I didnt agree. I thought that would be the end of it. But no... again Experain surprised me.. within a couple of days i had received a letter from Experian to advised me that they were looking into my complaint and they had contacted the company on my behalf (always helps when you have been chasing them yourself for months without any joy) to ask them if they are willing to remove the information based on the information I had given. They added a notice of correction to my account - This is so that if you apply for credit elsewhere the company you have applied to will see that you disagree with the information supplied and why, and they wrote to any company that may have looked at my credit file in the last 6 months to advised them that they cannot take the ''incorrect information'' into consideration when deciding credit worthiness.

I was impressed with all this but better still if anything changes on my credit file at all within the next 12 months( hence the £49.00) they email me immediatley to let me know.
When you log back on using the link that they send you it tells you exactly what has changed. This could just be an agreement has ended and been updated or something similar but it will email you every time your credit file is searched and tell you who by. Great if like me someone has accessed your details.
You can put a stop to it within a week.
They have also set me up a password so if anyone tries to use my details thay have to give the password before a search can be done.
A very quick and efficient service has been provided by Experian to safe Guard us all. Well Done to them.
And please all be careful make sure it doesnt happen to you and once it has its very difficult to prove.

It would also pay you to have your mail redirected when you move. Not only is it cheaper you are taking a preventative step as well. :-)

We had problems with out mortgage credit check and we were advised to request experion reports as well. They was a anormality on my partners check but once that was sorted it was all fine. I would also recommened Experian for anyone who can't figure out why a store card application is rejected or such like. It is a really valuable service. Nicky x
