Having spent far too much time in front of the TV, watching Ugly Betty, amongst other things, I realised I had been neglecting my alter-ego, Mascara Woman, and her mission- to find the world's best mascara. I promptly put on my Mascara Woman disguise of killer heels and strappy dress, throwing a stylish coat over the top (even superheroes get cold) and set out in search of the perfect mascara.
As I walked, images flashed through my mind, images of the beautiful women in the aforementioned TV show. There was a recurring theme in these images- long luscious eyelashes. I couldn't get them out of my mind- that was what I wanted, I realised. How on earth did they end up with eyelashes like that, so long, so thick, so perfectly curled? It didn't take long for my razor sharp super-hero mind to work out the answer- false eyelashes! Mascara woman would have to deviate from her mission, and explore a more extreme option.
I
consulted with my trusty sidekick, Irish Red, who had some experience in the world of false eyelashes, and her recommendation was this: best results would be obtained using individual lashes, rather than those that come in a strip. She recommended some brands, but as I had limited time, I wasn't able to search them out and instead settled on the first brand I came across, Eylure. The eyelashes in question were semi-permanent. I really only wanted them to last one night, but, hey maybe superheroines should have long eyelashes every day, so I gave them a go.
Included in the box were 45 lashes (well actually small groups of lashes), divided into 3 lengths- short, medium and long. There is also a handy insrtuction leaflet, in a variety of languages, a bottle of eyelash glue, and a bottle of eyelash remover.
I carefully read the instruction leaflet, and duly poured a small amount of the glue onto a piece of aluminium foil as instructed. I chose not to use the long lashes, as these are obscenely long, and, since I was undercover, a more subtle look was the order of the day. So, I selected a short lash from the box, using tweezers, dipped it in the glue and placed it near, but not touching my eyelid as instructed. A couple of seconds later it was attached. Easy. And so it continued, choose lash, dip in glue, apply. For the first eye I really had no problems at all. Oh, except for the fact that the glue dried very quickly on the aluminium foil, meanning I was continually having to add more. I guess this a necessary side effect of the glue needing to be quick drying so you don't have to stand for hours waiting for your eyelashes to stick.
So, on to the other eye. Choose lash, dip in glue, apply, open eye, eyelash falls off. Try again. Same effect. Try again. Curse. Call Irish Red for help. Relax. I don't know why, but for some reason I find it much more difficult to apply the lashes to my right eye than my left. Maybe it's because all my superhero sleuthing has somehow effected my ability to close this eye while keeping the other open. The second time I used the lashes I found the same situation- no problems with left eye, but the right eye was really tricky, and with Irish Red having left me to my own devices on this occassion I had no choice to persevere. Well, I wouldn't be a superheroine if I gave up at the first hurdle! With a lot of screaming and shouting I did manage to get the lashes on both eyes, but the left eye definitely looked better than the right.
So, on to the next phase of the test. Staying power- well I have used these lashes twice and both times they've lasted the whole night. Even the long ones have pretty much managed to stay in place for an evening. However, both times I have left them on when I went to bed, and woken up the next morning to find some have fallen off- which begs the question- would they last 3 - 4 weeks as claimed on the packaging? Well, it may surprise you to hear me say- actually, I think they would. I say this because the lashes that have stayed on have been firmly stuck in place, and it is only with considerable time and effort using the remover that I've been able to remove them. I guess the trick is applying them properly in the first place.
Would the average woman want to wear them all the time? Well, they do look great, and not completely unnatural, especially if you only use the short and medium ones. On top of that, they are surprisingly comfortable, and don't intefere too much with my superhero duties at all. However, I can't help but wonder if it would damage your own lashes to wear them all the time. And, sure it's nice to play glamour puss occassionally but, for me, the natural look is best for day to day.
These lashes are available in black, brown and neon colours. They claim to be safe for contact lense wearers, although let me tell you- when you get the glue or the remover in your eye it hurts (even when you're a superhero). Research suggests Eylure do not engage in animal testing. These lashes are available from Superdrug (and many other places) for about £4.45. I'm afraid I must leave now- it's been a nice departure into the world of false lashes, but Mascara Woman's task is not yet complete. For the sake of all womenkind I will not rest until I've found the perfect mascara!
