I was always very jealous of all the celebrities and magazine cover girls glancing into the camera with their huge amazing eye lashes, so yesterday I thought I give it a try and I went to the pharmacy to purchase one of these do it yourself wonder kits.
The package My choice was Ylure mainly because of the packaging. I have never tried false eyelashes before, so I thought I need to try the most professional looking one, even if it is a little bit more expensive the quality might help me to get over the beginners difficulties. The Ylure’s package is really inviting, the discrete white and lilac shades suggest luxurious quality and the transparent window in the middle showing the individually fixed different sized lashes says this product has nothing to hide, no risk in the purchase. On the front side you can read 3 promises: 1)very natural intense effect 2)will last up to 4 weeks 3)suitable for contact lens wearers –sounds good, natural is perfect for first isn’t it? On the back side of the package you can see the steps for applying, which seem pretty easy as well, lash out of box by tweezers, into the glue, on the lid -ready! And of course the compulsory “before” and “after” images: impressive however I’m far over the period when I believed in those. My imagination better shows Penelope Cruz’s amazing advert photo with the huge lashes, then me with the same sight -a little dream never hurts- a quick look on the sign “adhesive & remover included” and I’m already at the till paying for the wonder product. It wasn’t that cheap, I paid nearly 5 pounds for the box, but if it makes a magazine girl of me who cares?
The content of the box I couldn’t wait to get home and open the inviting pretty little box and check for the content, I’ve always loved this part, just like
in Xmas! I did so very soon, which process this time had not much surprises to offer for me, the box contained exactly what was stated on the package: 1 adhesive, 1 remover, the lashes and the user’s guide. I would call this a reasonable content, if it was me I’d also add at least a cheap small pair of tweezers (in case the poor customer can’t find her own in the despair to try the new purchase) and a small aluminium disc (that could have save me from a half an hour looking for the adequate aluminium foil), but let’s not be too fussy! I headed for the user’s guide!
The user’s guide The user’s guide looks quite professional for the first look, it contains 10 languages altogether (GB, NL,I, F, DK/N, GR, D, P, E FIN) each in a well separated different section, even the letters are well readable, not too small or patchy. It starts with the application guide divided into 7 separate steps. 1)Clean lashes and eyelids to ensure they are oil free. –very straight forward. 2)Pour a few drops of Lash Extend adhesive onto a piece of aluminium foil (not included)-How much exactly of the glue? It doesn’t seem enough at all!!! Anyway first let’s run to find a piece of foil, if there is any...why didn’t they mention on the box what extra I need?! 3)We recommend using the short pieces for your inner eyelashes, medium for centre lashes and long for outer corner lashes. –makes sense. 4)Choose a lash and remove from the tray with tweezers. Dip the knotted end of the lash into the adhesive. Wait about 30 seconds until the glue is tacky. –Tweezers? Another tool they forgot to mention before, thanks God I have one just here! Let’s take a lash...ouch it got broken and deformed...another one...may be with one quick pull...oh got this one! Dip-dip, we must be over the difficult part! 5)Start with the left eye, using your right hand place the lash on top of your own lash with the knotted end close to but not touching your eyelid. –Right...tell me: how can I take the lash out of the tweezers with my finger while keeping the glue on it? How???? It just seems impossible for me...never mind, let’s try to place it with the tweezers...but placing where? My lashes facing upwards while my eye is closed not letting to put the false lash straight on the top...I can place it to the eyelid-lash meeting point with an incredible effort when I realise the glue got dried up and the false lash sticks more to the tweezers than to my lid...oh dear...let’s start from the beginning...grrr...the lash got deformed by the tight squeeze of the tweezers. Finally I manage to stick one false lash (swimming in glue) to the lid on the top of my own (more or less)...yess...when I think the glue must be dry I pinch it with my 2 fingers together with my own lash...GOOD, this time it didn’t stick to my finger either...it is on the right place (I think), looks a bit deformed but who cares???...it is on!!!! Only 50 more to go!!! Erm...46...I have already damaged 4... 6)Stroke the lash extension down the lash retuning to your starting point (this will give the extension a larger surface to adhere to and ensure the full wear period for the lash) –Hmmm I don’t even try to understand what they mean by that, I’m better ok with a shorter wear period, for now I’d even feel happy if I had nice lashes only for this evening. 7)Gradually work towards the outer corner. In general you will apply between 15 and 30 per eye. –For me it doesn’t seem to matter which corner do you start or which direction are you going, the whole process is close to impossible if you’re alone. 15-30 per eye? May be if you have spare glue, mine ran out at about 12/per eye, 1 drop stayed in the bottle totally dry.
Tips: I don’t copy them here now, but believe me they won’t help you out in this battle. Ok just an example: One is something about a petroleum jelly which suppose to control the bottom lashes –The only things I haven’t notice to be disturbing were the bottom lashes...and...you start the whole thing to make your lids oil free if you put p. Jelly on the bottom lashes I don’t know how can u avoid some getting on your lid while fighting with all hands to place the false lash right...I couldn’t! Etc...Etc...Etc...
The result Finally I managed to put about 12-13 lashes on each eye in the suggested order (little ones in inner corner, then middle ones, long ones in outer corner), but the whole picture just didn’t seem right. The lashes (long and middle ones as well) looked far too long to be natural, some of them showed marks from the tweezers hold, while some others didn’t seem to stand straight where they should have been. My eyes were painful after concentrating during the whole more hours process, at some points on my lid I felt the dried glue and the long lashes gave a strange feeling while blinking. Anyway I went to sleep leaving the decision for the next day. In the morning I looked into the mirror and decided straight away: I need to remove them. They looked horribly unnatural, fake and silly in daylight and when I showed to my mum she confirmed what I thought. She said she had the feeling while watching it, that she need to remove something dirt (the lash) from my eye, it was such a disturbing sight. So I went for the removing.
The removing “The lash extensions can be easily removed with the enclosed Lash Extend Remover. Apply a small quantity of the remover to the bulb of a disposable cotton bulb (not supplied) Leave for a moment to soak in. Gently wipe the lash away onto a tissue held beneath eye.” (User's guide) Well...yes and I did so. They came off quite quickly, however after the former days torture my lids were still a bit sensitive and as I was trying to wipe away the false lashes gently they were terribly pulling my real lashes, which gave an unpleasant stinging feeling. After I finished with them I still felt the stinging feeling in my lids for a good couple of hours and the removing material caused a tearing (allergy?) in one of my eyes which lasted till the evening. (The removal happened in the morning)
Summary about my opinion on the product This product is difficult to use, doesn’t give the result that it promises and I think the whole thing doesn’t worth it’s price.
My advice If you would like to try false eye lashes go for an expert person who can stick them for you with much less trouble and the result should be nice and guaranteed as well.
