The first football game I ever owned was Football Italia 90 for my old Mega Drive. The FIFA series have certainly progressed since then and this is the latest addition from a company that are by now, well use to producing cracking football games.
To be fair I'm a little biased. I've always been a FIFA man, admired the way EA Sports can put together such an interactive game but still make it enjoyable to those who aren't even interested in football. To me, the Pro Evo series just doesn't hack it, unless you physically want to change all the names etc.
Introduction then:
At first I was a little daunted. A manager mode? Gulp... So to start with I proceeded straight into the game. Before you play your first game it offers you the chance to play a famous "classic" eleven startup. IF you win this then you can unlock other stuff. However, since I hadn't played a football game for a while, I lost... All was not over though, as I changed the difficulty setting down and choose my own team (Liverpool) to play in a Merseyside Derby against Everton and thrashed them 1-0.
Ok, so FIFA 06 is a bit harder than the older versions I'm use to playing, I'm sure I'll get use to it. And use to it I did. Within several games I was scoring goals left, right and indeed centre. The commentary seems much better than the old games, with less randomness and some even a bit of comedy to keep you entertained. The graphics are beautiful. Little splashes of water if the pitch is wet and the players movement is very fluid, with the odd little cockup here and there but hardly noticeable.
Scoring is very different to older games and is much more difficult. I for one however, see this is as a good thing as it keeps the scorleine much more respectable rather than a rugby like score at the end.
So on to the Manager mode.
This was a little tricky to start with, as I'd never played Champ Manager or anything like that before. I started with a local team called Yeovil and managed to get them to win the Premiership and FA Cup within 3 years - quite a feat I'm sure you'll agree! The transfer of players is easy, and moving them around the pitch is also straightforward. Something that confuses me though is the teams Morale. You can have 8 wins on the trot and yet you still get one or two players whose morale is on the low side, even though they've played in every game. But I'm sure I'll figure it out soon.
Also under management you can scout for players and get sponsorship which is great fun to play around with.
A couple of features that are missing to me. There's no autosave feature, so you have to manually save after every game. Also, the menu systems can sometimes be a little slow. Particularly in-game you may have to wait a few seconds for the start menu to pop up, and it kinda puts you off wanting to sub players as you know you'll have to wait. Also, injured players are extremely annoying. You get one injury and your whole team can go downhill. I had 5 at one time and just couldn't physically play for about 5 games until a couple of them recovered.
The AI however is very good. They skip and weave past you without a problem, although sometimes the keepers are either amazing or crap, but that's the way of the game I suppose. All in all I rate this better than Pro Evo, simply due to the ease with which someone can pick this up and get involved.
Given the comments received, FIFA 06 can be now bought for around £20 from retail outlets and also online stores such as Amazon.co.uk (£20.99). Availability is fine, most places have laods of copies and ebay has hundreds!

...changed but on playing the fifa franchise for the first time in over two years a few months ago I felt like I was 12 and had my Sega mega drive with fifa.
Yes really it did that so I will try and explain why this game brought those childhood feelings back. It is very simple really the clubs have the proper names the players have the proper names the game play has got better and most of all the goalkeepers get it wrong and you can score screamers ... ...you can have the classic fifa set up of circle to shoot or the new set up of square to shoot.
Now depending on the set up depends on the in game buttons. I will advise on the classic set up. The buttons are very easy to get the hang of the O button is to shoot depending how long you hold the button down depends on the shot power and the accuracy. Crossing and hoofing the ball up field is done by holding down the square button again if you hold the ...

Advantages: Good Fun, Graphics, REAL teams/names, Music, Length of usage Disadvantages: To many menus, No player rating stars, Morale
FIFA 2006 is the greatest sports platform game in the world.
It beats its competitors hands down every time, and its easy game play is amazing.
Having the real team and players name really helps you to feel really in charge of your local team to the richest clubs.

One annoying fact is that there are so many menus to work ... ...change, where-as with the previous FIFA stars ratings change where-as now the ratings change between 1-100. ...of a lot of the Fifa games starting when I had my sage the first one I played I think was Fifa 95 which I thought was fantastic back then but each one they have brought out since then have got bet and bet and Fifa 2006 is great. Fifa '06
Oh yes here it is ladies and gentlemen, coinciding with the start of my university year - the new FIFA 2006!!
Called a national institution for over a decade by Amazon.co.uk this game is as important to British life as pie and chips… or so they'd have you believe.
- Introduction -
For those who don't know, this is a football game for the PS2. It is a one-two player game through many leagues such as Premiership, Championship, La Liga, ... ...I found this version of Fifa a significant improvement on previous versions, the actual playability of the game is quite high - I always take the stance that unless you actually enjoy playing a game it doesn't matter how realistic or 'pretty' it is. The difficulty of the game varies from player to play - i.e. I batter my dad but get beat by my 8 year old cousin. The controls of the game are pretty much the same as previous versions plus a few new ...

Advantages: Great Graphics, good gameplay Disadvantages: lack of features, some FPS drops, online Lag
's previous versions and the other console versions.
I have played FIFA06 on the PC and on the PS2. Therefore I can tell you that there has definately been graphical enhancements since those two versions, which is a good step forward.
In terms of features this game is not exactly stacked in comparison, and if you are looking for a game with a lot of features and are not a graphics junky like myself head to the store and buy a copy of FIFA06 its a great game and in my opinion better than the Pro Evo counter parts.
So the game does not actually have many new features, apart from the abilty to play with a team during loading, but it definately steps up the graphics and is a must buy for a 360 owner looking to play some footie with mates. ...
Advantages: more quick games and better graphics Disadvantages: some bad graphics e.g. the crowd
the graphics are ten hundred times better.
Auto save
The auto save come into Fifa 07 and is back in Fifa 08, the auto save allows your game to save straight after you have played a game so if your ps2 decides to freeze you have still got your game saved unlike Fifa06. This was a real pain because Fifa06 always used to freeze and you had to start again from where you saved it manually last. If you don't like the auto save you can turn it off in game settings.
Quick game
There are 3 types of quick games in Fifa 08, Classic, Be a Pro and Zone Play.
Classic
The "Classic" game is a normal match between two teams either you against the computer or you against your friend.
Be A Pro
The "Be A Pro" game is great and new to Fifa 08, you can play as any one player in the team and the computer plays for the rest of the team. Although ...

Advantages: Great LICENCES...GREAT Graphics...BLAH...BLAH...BLAH Disadvantages: IT'S NOT PRO EVOLUTION 06
.This feature logs you in for online play as soon as youo start up your PS2 with FIFA06 in it.
The game play for me still feels to animated. The players move a bit unrealistically and though it is smooth it just does not feel real "yet".
The graphis is great and with the licences most people will probably prefer it above Pro Evo. But licences isn't everything.
The fact that you can take any club and develope it to become the best is also cool.
I found it too easy to score goals even on the world class level and after two days I could go through an entire season without losing a single game.
The fact that you can link it with your PSP is also great although I haven't tried it yet. you can also simulate matches and the addition of the challenges is also a plus.
The Music and commentary is also great.
I have to say the guys at EA Sports really ...
