between the virtual giants of FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer. Konamis game has always been the favourite but last year FIFA closed the gap to such a degree that the title race has never been closer. This years FIFA uses a completely new game engine, for the first time built specifically for the next gen consoles. But improved graphics and animation are only the half of it, with just as much focus going on the artificial intelligence thanks to the new "35 point decision engine". What this basically means is that every player on the pitch is fully aware of those around him and constantly thinking about tactics and position when not under your control.Other changes include better modelled physics for taking a shot on goal, which take into account everything from air pressure to the angle of your foot. Youre also able to create your own special moves to replicate every possible trick from real life. There are also new game modes including Be A Pro which challenges you to play the role of a single player through a whole season or career. On top of this there are revamped online leagues to play a virtual season in the Premier League, Bundesliga, French League or Mexican 1st Division against real opponents. With 620 licensed teams, 30 offline leagues and 15,000 players as well FIFA might just have made enough new signings this year to put it over the top.Harrison Dent

However, FIFA 08 for the Xbox 360 is undoubtedly the best ive ever seen/played. Let me tell you exactly why its so excellent:
Graphics - The Xbox 360 version of the game really does bring out the best of FIFA. The players look more real than ever before, and not just the major stars of the game (Rooney, Ronaldo etc). This is case for almost every player on each team! What impresses me though is the little things, the way the ball hits the net and the realism its movement, among others that you'll see for yourself if you play the game. Another point that I cannot miss out are the stadiums. Most of the big UK & Europe stadiums are perfectly replicated, non more so than Old Trafford. This does bring me to one of the only downsides to the game, outside the top 5-6 stadiums in the UK every other is a generic stadium. E.g. Chelsea has Stamford Bridge but Tottenham does not have White Hart Lane. Now this isnt exactly the biggest issue but it would have been a nice extra for all the Premiership teams to have their real stadium.
Gameplay/Modes - Some FIFA games in the past have been criticised for being too rigid and un-orignal in the gameplay area. FIFA 08 has changed, EA Sports have updated the game engine so that the ball and players move more realistically than ever before. For those who actually play the sport may appreciate that the ball does not always go where you want it, and striking it on a volley isnt too easy, all this is shown in the game. Gone are the days where you can continue to produce the same moves to score a goal. This is an obvious benefit as it makes you be more creative in your play.
Game modes are fairly similar to previous years, with options to: create your own tournament, play in an existing tournament, play now (go straight to a game, convenient for multi-player) and manager mode, but this year has seen the arrival of 'Be a Pro'. This allows you to play as a single player during a match of your choice. It can be difficult to get used to not having control of every player but it is the closest many of us will get to playing with our favourite team! I must add that to get the most from this mode you do need to play online. I, along with many others use the manager mode the most when playing FIFA. This allows you to have control of a team through a full season, including all cups matchss, league matches & european matches. This therefore gives you long term goals, to avoid relegation, win the cup etc, so that it increases the game's appeal and it's longevity. In this mode you can also sign/sell players, choose your formation, team, staff. You can also deal with player & sponsor contacts which gives you the added responsability to look after the clubs money! My only issue with the mode is that it is too easy to change clubs during your career. FIFA 07 made you work up from the lower leagues to gain prestige before you could manage bigger clubs, FIFA 08 allows you to choose who you want whenever.
Sound - Many football games suffer from repetitive commentry, and im afraid so does this one but nowhere near to the extent as previous editions. Gray & Tydsley (probably spelt wrong) give some excellent and interesting views/facts about the game while you are playing and I love the way that some of them are team specific. At Stamford Bridge they talk about Chelsea and their stadium. There are noticably more player names on the game than ever before so the commentry is more complete and fluid. Crowd chanting and other effects are also present and add to the overall feel that you are playing/watching a real match, which is great.
I would certainly recommend this product to anyone! Although im sure that it may be slightly more suitbale to football fans. The game is really enjoyable and very addictive! Its hard to stop playing, especially when you are on a roll. I believe that the game is great value for money as you can literally play for months and months and not get bored. As far as price goes, at the moment expect to pay around £39.99 for it.
Personally what makes a football game for me is realism, not just how the ball moves and what the players do but also to have all the appropriate licensing. FIFA is the only game that has all real players, real teams, real kits, real stadiums and tournements and this really gives it a massive plus point and gives it a big advantage over its rivals.
"FIFA 08 is dramatically more real and exhilarating with the inclusion of 620 licenced teams, 30 official leagues, and more than 15,000 players" (EA SPORTS)
There are a few tiny points which I identifed which EA Sports could do to make it that everso bit better, but I cant emphasize enough how close this game is to being perfect. Go and give it a go!
Advantages: Superb graphics, amazing gameply, online play is good fun Disadvantages: end of the day its all football so there is a chance of boredom!
...never a fan of the FIFA games. I was always a pro evo man! Then one day I was bored and bought FIFA 08 on the pc and got addicted. A few weeks later I bought myself an xbox 360 and FIFA 08 was one of the games to come with it. What a difference it made from the PC to the 360. As soon as you load up the game and sit through all the dull intros and logo's, the first thing you are given is a training ground where you play as Ronaldinho and can have ... ...continues throughout the game whenever a match is being loaded up so instead of having to sit through some boring stats or whatever, you can have a play around and improve your skills. Great idea I think!
If you press start on the training part, you will be taken to the main menu where you can choose from the usual settings - Play now, options, etc. The only two options I will focus on here are the Manager Mode and the Be a Pro mode. The rest are ...

Advantages: great fun and sleak graphics also quite cheap. Disadvantages: You may get bored after a while.
...i thought of the previous fifa games and they were good to so i decided to buy this from game station for a measly £28.00 (preowned). I got home and started playing instantly, the first thing you can do is play as Ronhaldinio (one of the worlds best footballer),you can practice here as a one man team practice and take shots towards the goalie, i.e. this is a perfect way to get to understand the controls.
When you press start the menu will appear ... ...definante improvement over the previous fifa games because you can clearly see where your player is and the crown of fans look more realistic, the crowd can cheer and boo teams if they do not like them. The commentater is good and is easy to understand also he provides a detailed list of what you are doing in the football match also he used to be or still is a famous commantater.
There is a multilayer mode where you can play online with other people ...

Advantages: Be a Pro, 5 v 5 online Disadvantages: Learning curve
The FIFA series. Its like marmite. You either love it or hate it. When it comes to console football games your either in the FIFA camp or the Pro Evo camp. Both games have been fighting hard for each others customers for a good few years now. Both have taken note of each others games and borrowed certain aspects.
FIFA in recent years has definitely changed the way it plays to be more like Pro Evo but retaining its simulation style. I was one of ... ...Evo has been slipping whereas FIFA has been making ground.
This year EA Sports rolled out an excellent new feature. They call it "Be a Pro". In this you take on the role of just one individual on the pitch and play as only them, no switching player like in the normal play mode. If your not disciplined and wander all over the pitch then you are likely to concede goals. They have also brought this feature into the Xbox Live section. In addition to ...

Advantages: Great graphics and gameplay modes. Xbox live features. Proper players and updates Disadvantages: None so far
I have owned Fifa 08 for 1 week and have to say I think it's great. The pace of the game is much slower than Fifa 07 which needs some getting used to but doesn't spoil the game in any way. The game play is more difficult with more emphasis on slow build up play rather than the quicker arcade style of last year. So far I have found goal scoring to be much more difficult with 1 all draws and 1 nil wins much more frequent. My main method of scoring ... ...popping up with a header. If the ball hits the ground you have the usual goal mouth scramble with defenders and attackers piling in. High balls are often controlled on the players chest then a nice volley towards goal. Unfortunately one way to score regularly is to shoot from a diagonal, the keeper often pushes the ball out into the path of an oncoming striker for an easy tap into the back of the net!
The graphics are the usual high standard, although ...

The FIFA 08 next-gen gameplay engine, built to maximize the power of the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system and the PLAYSTATION 3 computer and entertainment system, delivers animations and ball control that is so responsive you feel like you are actually on the pitch. Players are now aware of their surroundings, reacting authentically to threats and opportunities to make intelligent decisions.
Now with the FIFA 08 shooting system you can enjoy even more control and precision in front of the goal to become a true marksman.
For the first time ever, fans playing FIFA 08 will face the pressure to improve their game that real-world players endure every day. A new play mode called Be A Pro locks you in the role of a single player and challenges you to master the same disciplines as a real professional player - from positioning and tackling to reading the field and passing.
