What a brilliant game. Thats how id like to start this review.
I havent bought a Fifa game since like Fifa 03. So to take a gamble on this one was out of the ordinary for me. Ive always been a Pro Evo man but after consulting many of my friends and also playing the demo of Fifa 09 I was immediately hooked. Pro Evo has been disappointing for me in the previous few years with no real improvements to gameplay, fifa had so many advantages this time around it was an easy choice for me.
First off, the graphics are immense. I am using a HDMI cable through my HD Samsung TV and the results are very impressive. Even the crowd are visible to a degree (much improved compared to previous versions).
There are so many modes of gameplay. Firstly there is Manager Mode where you run a club from season to season in which you have many key day to day decisions to make. For example, choosing sponsors, managing finances, buying and selling players, press conferences, media spotlight, scouting, staff improvements, player growth. The depth is unreal.
The best improvement out of the lot is probably the player growth, you can choose to individually manage each players growth stats via experience points
which you aquire each game they play. You then use these experience points to alter such attributes as shooting, acceleration, marking, aggression, strength and weaker foot accuracy. This improves your player on the areas you feel will be best for their development. (Brilliant for young players).
The next game mode is Be A Pro Seasons. This mode has been on the last version of the Fifa but this year it is much improved. In this mode you take control of 1 player for 4 seasons and try to guide them to the ultimate goal of a legendary footballer. The matches are the same but you can only control 1 player instead of the whole team.
In Be A Pro Season you can either take control of a real player e.g. Wayne Rooney or create a base player from scratch. e.g. Joe Bloggs. I chose to be a base player from scratch. You start your player as a reserve in what ever team you choose and have to eventually lead them to Captain of the first team, in which you get added bonuses as choosing tactics and kick takers etc... This though is a long way off from the point you start. It took me around 35 games.
During Be A Pro games you have several targets to meet such as "take 5 shots" and so on...completing these gets you experience points that you can use, as explained before to improve your Pro.If you keep improving your Pro you will eventually (some way down the line) get picked to play for your country. This will take you then on your way to becoming a legendary footballer. Be careful though you only have 4 seasons to achieve this!!!
Other game modes include simple Tournaments such as Premier League/La Liga (where you play 1 season) and try to win the League at the end of it.
The next part of my review will be explaining the Online game modes that are available and they are also GREAT!
Firstly, BAP online 11 vs 11 team play...
In this mode you take control of 1 player in a team in an online game. All other players excluding goalkeepers are taken up by other people such as yourself all over the world. In my case there has been no lag time which is great, the game runs very smooth even though there are 2-20 players simultaneously connecting. The downside would be that too many of the online players just chase the ball (like schoolboy football) so in the end it isnt really a game of football. Just who can showoff the most.
Secondly, in this Fifa you can now become part of an Online Club. In this online club it works the same as 11vs11 team play but the other 9 members are your friends. You can invite friends to join your club and then once you have a full team you can arrange matches with other online clubs. I think this is a great idea but would it would take a lot of time to get set-up. e.g. getting all your mates online to play at the same time!!! Neverless, it is a pretty nifty idea.
Other online game modes include 1vs1 gameplay, ranked gameplay (playing in a ranking system), and the dressing room (where you can meet other online players and have them a game).
Another feature of the new Fifa 09 is Adidas live update season. In the live update you download (each week) an update for a league of your choice. i.e. Premiership. By downloading this update you keep up to date with all the latest transfers and also player form. For example, if a player is scoring goals for his club in real life his form will improve for that week...Therefore Rooney may start as overall 85 one week then he may score a hat-trick and when you download the latest update he will become a 89. Hope you catch my drift.
Other features of the new Fifa 09 include create a player, edit teams, lounge mode, and custom celebrations (celebrations that differ depening on which key combination you choose)
The sound in this game doesnt really differ too much from previous versions (not that that is a bad thing), the backing songs are all the latest indie hits from the charts. The commentary on Fifa 09 is once again headed by Andy Gray and Martin Tyler, a great combination as usual.
Overall, this is an excellent game, probably the best fooball game I have ever played and the depth is outstanding. It really is. If you are a big fan of football games, believe me you will be hooked.
I would reccommend this game to any age group between 8-60 its easy to pick up after playing a few games.
I purchased this on the day of release for £40 from Game. Standard price but well worth it.
Well thats it for my review, hope that you enjoyed it and if you have anymore questions just e-mail me. Cheers.
