Despite what the title suggests, before this game was released I had always been a big fan of the International Superstar Soccer Pro franchise and definitely a great skeptic of the Fifa brand. Which therefore makes it all the more surprising that I have taken to this game in such positive fashion. As I am sure many of you fellow football gamers are aware, the last few ISS Pro releases have been very disappointing and it is the complacency and perhaps lazyness of the developers which has seen me gravitate towards Fifa.
So despite my skepticism I decided to put aside my own misgivings and give the game a chance, I am truly I did. So what can you expect from Fifa? well initially we have the standard set up of all the major European leagues, all of the English leagues up to League 2 as well as several other leagues including the J League and the Major League. This is no innovation by itself but does immediately make the game stand out as the only one to have the right to use all the teams and all the player names.
The new innovative feature on this game however is management mode. You now have the ability to manage any team and attempt to make them the shining stars of Europe or wherever else you decide to manage. You have the ability to buy and to sell players and to improve other features of your team including players attributes by investing money into improving the quality of your coaches and increasing the capacity of the stadium which in turn will generate more revenue and allow for better players to be purchased.
So onto the game itself, the graphics are a cut above, both stadiums and players are brilliantly detailed, very sharp and some of your favourite stars are instantly recognisable. Contrasting this again between the graphics of this game and Pro Evo, there really is no contest.
As for gameplay, motion is fluid, movement is very realistic and the passing system is excellent if a little difficult to get a hang of immediately. This means that spectacular passing moves and goals are possible but this will depend on your skill and ability. A major gripe of mine with previous Fifa's was the tackling system. Tackling was slow and unresponsive therefore making slide tackles a nightmare to pull off. Thankfully this has been resolved as tackling is sharp, responsive and slide tackles are fairly easy to pull off providing you time things right.
Of course where this game really comes into it's own is pitting your wits against friends and of course if you like playing the online facility, you have the ability to play people from all over the world. There is also a new feature called 10 vs 10 which allows you to simply control one player. This allows for a new dimension to the play but is something I was not particularly bothered about as you can go for long period of the game without the ball but credit must still go to Electronic Arts for this new feature.
This game feels like a real football game and it is very easy to become immersed in it which of course is the mark of a game whose longevity is not in doubt.
However this is not a flawless game, tremendously exciting and enthralling it might be, it definitely has addictive qualities but it does have some frustrations. These are.... If you try and turn sharply whilst running, the ability to turn is very sluggish The referees brush aside fouls from the computer with alarming regularity The keepers can be slow to react to intercept passes which they should be able to make. The commentary can also get repetitive and monotonous but you can always turn the volume down if this gets too annoying.
Don't let these things detract from what is an excellent game though.
