As a fan of the FIFA series since the 07 edition I was looking forward to this games release well in advance, pre-ordering months before it was hitting the shelves. I generally start of disliking the new game in the series, not liking most of the changes and generally being in a strop about how they've made everything worse - this year was no different. It's mainly because I get beat all the time when I first start playing.
Onto the ... ...became available last yera in FIFA 09. For me this is a very enjoyable part of the game. As you're oplaying as just one player you have to think more about positioning and your decision making. It really makes you feels like you're part of the game, because the camera used for this puts you at pitch level, right in the middle of the action, looking through your players eyes. It's even better if you have surround sound.
Onto the game itself :
~~~Gameplay~~~
The big change this year is the addition of '360 dribbling'. This is different because instead of only being able to move in 8 different directions in previous titles (45 degree increments), you are now able to move much more freely in just about any direction you want. To take advantage of this though, you can't be sprinting, which at first really annoyed me, thank in part the next big change to the game - strength.
The strength of each individual player plays a much bigger role within the game than in previous years. With defenders generally being a lot stronger than the attackers (as Andy and Martin point out), this makes running past a defender a lot more difficult.
Whereas previously you could knock the ball past a defender using the right analogue stick, you now generally just get barged off the ball when you try to do it. The same applies to dribbling past someone, if you’re sprinting and trying to dribble at the same time; more often than not you're going to get out-muscled.
This is where the referees come in. For me they are far too strict, with quite a few of the shoulder challenges being punish - as long as you’re outside the box. That's where there is quite a bit of realism to the game in terms of the referee - you get much softer fouls outside the box than you do inside. The referees this time do get some plus points for trying to get out of the way of the ball if it's coming towards them, but it does still hit them quite frequently.
Possibly the most annoying thing is the defence. There is almost always one of your defenders playing everyone else onside; hopefully an update will be released to fix this.
The shooting has also been changed to my displeasure, although I am starting to get used to it. I felt the in-box shooting in 09 was perfect and should have been left alone, but changes needed to be made for long range shooting. They've changed both. It's harder to hit the target from close range now, but easier to score from long range. It's now alot more satisfying to score now, because of the increased difficulty.
Another aspect of the gameplay, which has been changed, is the continuation with the development of the player’s physics when they collide. This is supposed to make each individual collision different from the last, in this sense it does work. However, it does of course cause problems, the main one being when the ball enters the box - it turns into chaos if there are more than a few players around.
A small but very nice addition this year is the inclusion of quick free kicks. Instead of being fouled then having to watch a replay you sometimes get the option just to stop the ball and get on with it (I've used this to my advantage a few times).
The last aspect of the gameplay I want to mention are the stupid goalkeepers. There supposed to be more intelligent this year, but I don't think they are. They still let the ball roll out for a corner when they could easily catch it and still make silly attempts to close down the opposition with the ball. I have no confidence in my keeper to do anything right when the ball comes anywhere near them, although they do punch quite well.
Overall some nice improvements, which take some getting used to.
~~~Manager Mode~~~
Manager mode follows the same general model as before with a few changes. For those of you don't know what 'manager Mode' is, this is when you take control of a club and handle the transfers, team selection and you can either play or simulate the matches.
The player growth system has changed, so you can't cram all your points into one payer and make him the best in the world. Now your players earn points for 3 different categories - mental, physical and technical, based on how they play.
The other change is that transfer dealings are now more realistic. You can't buy players from Accrington Stanley for Barcelona anymore, as they "don't think they'll get enough playing time".
Other changes include the addition of friendlies and more realistic weather conditions to reflect the time of year. However, results within your league can still be unpredictable at times.
~~~Be a Pro~~~
Be a Pro is the game mode which allows you to create your own player and then play as him and only him for a club. With the overall ambition to represent your country.
This is something I wanted added for years and it eventually became available last yera in FIFA 09. For me this is a very enjoyable part of the game. As you're oplaying as just one player you have to think more about positioning and your decision making. It really makes you feels like you're part of the game, because the camera used for this puts you at pitch level, right in the middle of the action, looking through your players eyes. It's even better if you have surround sound.
This year the big addition to Be a Pro is the inclusion of 'Game Face', which I'll talk more about in the next section.
~~~Virtual Pro~~~
This is basically where your 'Be a pro' career begins. This is where you create yourself. You can put your height, weight, build, position all these things into the game and also choose your name from a big list of names so that when you get the ball in a match your name is said by Martin Tyler. Not every name is there, but fortunately for me my name is 'Wilson' which is pretty common.
This is also where you download your 'Game Face'. This allows you to take a photo of yourself and then upload it online so that the EA SPORTS website can generate your very own pixel self. This can then be imported into the game, through the 'Virtual Pro' menu.
My experience of this so far is quite good. I tried first time using a web cam and the results weren't the best. But when I used a digital camera to take my photo, the result was a lot better, but by no means perfect.
The overall process of creating your 'Game Face' is pretty easy, with step-by-step instructions guiding you through the process.
Once you've done this you're ready to start playing. With 'Virtual Pro' the objective is to gain achievement points throught all different game modes within the game. The easiest of which are simply scoring in the arena, but after that you have to use your created self to complete certain tasks in 'Manager Mode' and 'Be a Pro'.
~~~Online~~~
Of course the online function is still there and there have been a few minor improvements made to the online experience.
One of which that I like is that at the end of a ranked online game you now get a summary of how many points you have either lost or gained. I felt this was missing previously.
Another improvement is that if after 90 minutes it's a draw you and your opponent can now choose what you want to do from :
End as Draw Extra Time Extra Time & Pens
But if you disagree then the match ends in a draw.
For me online generally runs smoothly, with lag very rarely being an issue. At first a lot of games were disconnecting, but I think EA have since fixed that, as it is no longer happening. Also, last year in FIFA 09 when I used to try and use my headset it used to cause the game to crash a little bit now and again, this doesn't seem to be a problem this year. The sound quality still isn't very good though.
All of your stats are still saved within your 'Player HUB' and online leaderboards are there as always. The leaderboards at the moment appear to rank the top 10,000 in the world and top 10,000 in each country. At the moment I'm ranked around 7000 in GB, but don't have a ranking spot in the world rankings.
10v10 Team Play is still here. You can now play friends more easily. Previously when I wanted to play with just my friends I had to create a room then start as quick as possible without anyone else joining (there may have been an easier way), but now you can invite your friends to a private game. Nothing could really have been improved here unless they included the goalkeeper or substitutes, so when you're fed up with your real friends performance you sub them for some random player online.
You can still do manual celebrations within the game, so when someone scores against you online expect a long, drawn out clebration involving running backwards and forwards up the park and circling your players.
~~~Live Season~~~
This game mode is drastically changed from last year. Last year 'Live Season' provided you with players real life current form and no actual game mode.
This time round you choose your favourite club and then each week you play out the fixture which is happening in real life. Player form, injuries and suspensions are all updated and you only have one chance to re-create the score of this fixture in your teams favour.
Although you can only play the real fixture once, you can play friendlies beforehand, so you can master your tactics and choose how to play.
There are a limited number of leagues available to choose your team from, but before you can play them you do have to buy them from the PlayStation store. The leagues available are :
Barclays Premire League (England) Ligue 1 (France) Bundesliga (Germany) Primera Division (Mexico) Liga BBVA (Spain) Seria A (Italy)
You can choose a league to have a 5 match trial with. After that you have to buy them at a cost of £3.99 each or £7.99. They will probably be available for use on upto 5 PS3 systems so you always have the option to share the cost with friends (don't know how Sony feel about this).
~~~Graphics~~~
The graphics are generally the same as FIFA 09, with a few minor tweaks.
The players don't look as "gargoyley" as they did last year, but no real extra detail has been added. None really was needed as all the big name players generally look like their real life selves.
The main difference I noticed was the stadiums look a bit sharper in quality, both in the menus and within a match.
The fans are also a bit more individual and if you watch the cut-scenes you can see large group performing chants with arm gestures.
A very minor thing I think they could have improved on is the grass. It stills looks a bit "carpety" and I think they could have added a lit of bit extra detail to make the grass look more like grass. This is hardly a problem though.
The nets are also baggier than before.
~~~Audio~~~
Andy Gray and Martin Tyler are the commentators yet again; FIFA wouldn't be the same without them.
This is an aspect of the game where I think EA have been lazy. The phrases they use are still pretty much the same, with one or two new ones. And they say things now and again which are incorrect, for example "They've scored again immediately", when it's only 1-0.
You can now hear players communicating now and again, which is a nice feature.
The music, which gets played in the menus, is okay this year, but so far no songs really stand out for me. 09's music was better.
~~~Menus~~~
The menus have been tidied up this year. In FIFA 09 I often found myself going through unnecessary repetition of menus to do what I wanted, this has been fixed.
As always with FIFA and generally any EA game, the menus and overall look of the game is very professional looking.
~~~Controls~~~
The controls remain virtually unchanged from last year, other than a few minor things that most people wont use anyway.
You of course have the option to switch controller configurations, to one, which looks more like PES, with SQUARE to shoot.
And also still have the option to make your configuration, which I have opted not to do.
~~~Difficulty~~~
There are various difficulty levels to play on including :
Amateur, Semi-Pro, Professional, World Class & Legendary
So far I've only played on the first three. What I can say is the amateur difficulty is a little harder than usual, with defenders more prone to closing you down. Semi-pro is a bit harder, but I can generally win quite comfortably and I played a 5* team with a 1/2* team and managed to beat them, but it was tricky.
So, basically it's harder than last year, in my opinion anyway.
~~~Trophies~~~
The in-game trophies are quite easy to get if you want to achieve platinum, however they are very time consuming and will require upwards of at least 50 hours (50 hours gameplay is one of them).
Others include :
Play a manager mode season without simming a game (8-minute games x 40+ matches)
Become a 5* manager (Will take a few seasons)
~~~Other~~~
One of the other quite big additions is you can now create your own set pieces. From the arena you can access this function where you choose where the free kick is being taken from and then you can select players to make different runs. A nice addition, which is easy to use.
You can also access training mode from the arena, where you can play handicap matched versus the computer, practise free kicks, etc. This is something I thought had been missing and it's nice to see it's finally been included.
The game comes with plenty of in-game tutorials, voiced by Martin Tyler. These will come in handy if you've never played FIFA before.
You can now choose your favourite arena.
Inclusion of the Mexican League.
Loading times before matches are extremely quick (about 5 secs).
You can rename all the stadiums and the Santiago Bernabeu is available to download from free from the PS Store.
Manual celebrations appear to be unchanged.
~~~Where Would I like to See Improvements ?~~~
Obviously you can never have too many stadiums, so the more stadiums they continue to add the better. This year only the Santiago Bernabeu was added, so hopefully more will come in future.
The ability to skip your opponents celebrationsonline after a certain amount of time. Some people may think this would take away part of the fun, but if you're in a rush and you're playing someone that milks their goal for everything it's worth, it can become annoying.
More detail in the grass would be nice.
Increase world ranking spots on the head-to-head leaderboard to 100,000. This would give you a better idea of how you are doing.
Completely new commentary, it's been virtually the same for 3 years now.
I would also like to see some kind of training challenges (like PES used to have). By this I mean you have to dribble ropund cones within a certain time, or keep possession for 30 secs, etc.
~~~Conclusion~~~
After a very bad start I'm starting to get used to the game and therefore starting to like it. All other people I have spoken to are really happy with this (including lots of people switching from PES) and I'm slowly getting that way myself. Hopefully an update can fix some of the problems I've mentioned.
For some reason I feel this game will be a platform for FIFA 11 to be amazing (I know this is just out).
All the different game modes and things to do mean you will get hours of playing time out of this, making it well worth the cost of purchasng it. It's also in my opinion the best game to play when you've got some of your mates round.
I've since got used to the game and I'm really starting to enjoy it. I've got quite addicted to playing online and my origainl thoughts on the game better inferior to FIFA 09 were incorrect, they are at least equal now.
9/10
...is until now! I trialled Fifa 10 after reading all the hype and have to say that EA have finally stepped up and created an awesome football game. I have played PES 2010 and comparatively I feel its finally been outdone by Fifa 10. PES have upped their graphics and have made it shinier (a strange description I know but its just weird how shiny everything is), the players look more like the players themselves but I dislike the clunky turning and difficult ... ...There are certain aspects of Fifa 10 that I dislike, notably the referees. They are too often a nuisance and get in the way of the ball too often. And, at times the camera looses the ball which, while it makes it seem like your watching tv is highly annoying when you're trying to play that ever-so-clever through ball (hoof) or long ball. fifa 2010 was released at the beginning of last month October 2009, i have played with it many times, and i think the game is very difficult but its really good once you have cracked it, it takes a long time to get the rythm of the game, if you are very inexperienced in the fifa games then at the beginning you will lose almost every game you play, but you learn as you keep playing. The game is really updated from all the rest from the following releases, ...
Advantages: Fast paced action, great licensing, excellent detail, great graphics, brilliant replays Disadvantages: None
Fifa 10 is finally here following on from where Fifa 09 left off and it sees a huge step forward in terms of the development of the playing side. Advantages: Advanced version of 09' which was still awesome. Disadvantages: Hard to play the game and adapt to the changes from FIFA 09. Passing, Dribbling etc...
FIFA 10 is an even more advanced version of FIFA 09, believe it or not. I can stay up for hours playing this game and the only thing that would stop me from playing would the need for sleep.
I thought FIFA 09 was deadset the best FIFA game I had ever played. But this version has exceeded my expectations ten-fold.
FIFA10 (PS2)
Intro
Most of us have advanced on to consoles such as the PS3, Xbox 360, or Nintendo Wii, but for those of us who have not yet reached such stages, there still exists games being made for some of the lesser-used consoles, in this case, FIFA10 for the Playstation2.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the FIFA games, they allow users to control football players and play games against other teams in various different modes. Ever since their first one, they've progressed year by year, and can now boast a superb game with a gigantic database of players - featuring teams and nations from all over the world.
The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of FIFA10 were superb, showing us once more why EA Sports leads the way for football games, and for pretty much all sports games in general. The graphics were the best yet ...
