Another year when I am trying to defend FIFA and help it reclaim its position as king of the football in the gaming world. I thought FIFA 2005 was a improvement from FIFA 2004 and I still believe it was, but I now also think that FIFA 2006 is a improvement from FIFA 2005. Pro Evolution Soccer 5 came out just under a week ago and I am still yet to play it, although I hear from friends that it's as good as ever. So who will be victorious this year?

So what has improved from EA's last installment of the FIFA games? Well firstly the special features have been removed, meaning Off The Ball is gone and the First Touch has changed to the gamer needing to tap the right analogue stick to use the players first touch. Now I liked using the Off The Ball in FIFA 2005 and FIFA 2004 but I have been playing FIFA 2006 for just under a month now and I can tell you I haven't missed it once. Howcome I hear you ask, well it's simply down to the gameplay. I have always liked FIFA's and PES's gameplay as they are in my opinion are very different, and despite FIFA 2006's better gameplay they still are. Everything from FIFA 2005 has been put into FIFA 2006 and tweaked up a little bit, there is a bigger sense of realism in FIFA 2006 which is what EA has been trying to achieve and in my opinion accomplished, but more on that later. Free Kicks and corners have changed, now instead of complicated bars and settings you have a arrow. Yup that's it, a arrow, for corners at least not free kicks, you don't even have a arrow for them. For free kicks you set your aim and press B (shoot) which you will need to hold down to get the correct power while corners just involve you aiming the arrow in the direction you want the ball to go and holding down L if you want a hard cross or not holding down L for non hard shots. Simple.

Something which is new to the FIFA games is the team chemistry. This is basically your teams morale. So for example, if a team keeps winning and scores lots of goals they are going to have a good team morale and therefore the players on the team will perform better. If however you have lost a few games in a row your players may have a low morale and your team chemistry will decrease. This actually plays a bigger role than you might first think, I have actually won and lost matches because my team or my opponents have had a bad morale. It is a great addition and something which makes FIFA a better game than PES.

Manager mode is just like FIFA 2005's, 15 seasons where you try to accomplish gold in 26 leagues with over 10,000 players. This years edition of FIFA however has more managerial options for you in career mode. Just like FIFA 2005 you can buy players to improve your teams squad but now you have the option to loan players, set ticket prices, choose a sponsor and more. To top that off their is a great amount of unlockables. EA always focuses on making everyone of their games have a ton of unlockables and FIFA 2006 certainly does live up to EA's reputation. With 101 challenges ranging from scoring a goal in the first 5 minutes of a match on Professional difficulty to winning the Premiership you can get hours of enjoyment trying to complete them all. And your reward is points which goes towards buying unlockables which include celebration packs, player bios, season highlights and more.

I'm extremely pleased to see Ally McCoist finally booted out of the commentary position, his voice was so damn irritating. Now Clive Tilsley and Andy Gray are the commentators and it is a nice change from the horrible Scottish accent of Ally. Graphically the game is just like its predecessors, neat and effective. What really startled me is the graphics when you zoom in on a instant replay, they are unbelievable and great detail can be seen.

Verdict

FIFA 2006 is great and is a must for a FIFA fan. The realism is intense and multiplayer in the FIFA Lounge aswell as online capabilities give FIFA 2006 hours upon hours of lifespan, and that's without mentioning the 15 season career mode. PES is good but in my opinion isn't as good, but when I buy PES I'll see if my opinion changes.

Fifa 2006 has very good graphics. On the web available are lots patches which allow lots of add-ons, e.g. the implementation of official stadiums. Only disadvantage: after a while the game becomes boring because you simply win every match.

Review of FIFA 06 (Xbox) by obie-forlife

Advantages: very enjoyable and has good graphics.
Disadvantages: very addictive

fifa 06, my favourate sport in a TV -wow!!!!!!!!!!!!! well to start with i just go to mention that i really love football, i really think fifa 07 is good but i found fifa 06 much better to play simply because its not too realistic. when i play fifa 06 i enjoy it so much, i find it hard to leave my x-box. fifa 06 is a magnificent game and whet makes i evan better is the fact that its on x-box.the graphics on this game are also good easpecially on ...
...only way to win in fifa is to enjoy it) on thisw game there is a place where you can complete challenges which give you pionts to unlock stuff, challenges like scoring under 5min and etc. i cannot say fifa is a difficult game because you can choose your own level, there is . ameture-semi-pro-professioinal-world class. i play at worldclass, lol. another reason why i think fifa is enjoyable is because you can create your own team with all your favoiurite ... A great Xbox footy game - get it!
Review of FIFA 06 (Xbox) by mental_monk

Advantages: Gameplay, Graphics, Sound, Music ... its BRILLIANT!
Disadvantages: Online gaming not the fastest

...I also recently bought Fifa 2006 (for a tenner! woohoo!), and boy am I chuffed that I did! It was very easy to start playing this game. You choose your favourite team from the 500+ teams on offer and then are challenged to a game against a "Classic XI" team which is great fun. The controls are simple to pick up and it's nice to have the "through ball" option. You can of course change the controls from the in-game menus. There are so many extras ...
...it's almost like championship manager and you can play the game as well. Fifa 2006 has great graphics is fantastic to play and is far, far better than Pro Evo. It's the best Xbox footy game by a mile and is a must for your collection! ... Read review

Fantastic Footy Game
Review of FIFA 06 (Xbox) by EdwardChaput

Advantages: Improved control, skills, graphics replay ... everything??
Disadvantages: Manager mode too simple. Definitely a two player game. No friends - less fun!

If you are a regular fifa fan then expect the usual. A tweaked version of the game with annoying bugs removed plus a few special features. This is exactly what you get. The graphics and sound are better (great instant replays) you can score some beautiful goals and the skills are incredibly silky. Free kicks and corners have changed and reverted back to a style more reminiscent of Fifa 97, 98, 99 with a hint of the Pro Evo Style. Is it worth the ...
...a Pro Evo player then Fifa 06 lets you change the controls to the Pro Evo Style. I will never understand the Pro Evo debate as I have always been a Fifa man myself but for those of you who havent played it before give it a go - i recommend a rental to try it out - give it a few hours and be creative! Personally I would say it is the best footbal game around (I have Fifa 03, Fifa 05, Fifa 06, Fifa Road to world Cup, Pro Evo 4, Pro Evo 5, Winning Eleven ... Read review

Review of FIFA 06 (Xbox) by lorag1990

Advantages: great game and great things to do better than 2004 and 2005
Disadvantages: cant change players within teams

Fifa 2006 is one of the best simulation football games i have ever played! i think that it it very good the lengths of games you can have. incase you dont know you can have up to 15 seasons on the game! i think that it ids brilliant as i love going on to this sort of game and doing loads and loads of seasons. the link up between players is improved and also the graphics of the players faces and bodies and boots are greatly improved and there are ...
...buttons irresponsive to the commands given. however on this new fifa game i find it better than the others and it is the best fifa and best value for money than any of the other fifas or football games that havce been! i expect fifa 2007 to be even better ... Read review

On The Road To Next Gen Footy
Review of FIFA 06 Road to FIFA World Cup (Xbox 360) by  gaz_close

Advantages: visual feast
Disadvantages: lack of features lets it down badly

..., so EA wants to focus on international play for the upcoming World Cup. We'll buy that. So why not add some kind of managerial aspect, like being able to groom young players from the under-20 squads for the big show? How about being able to hand-pick your players based on some mini-camp tryout sessions, ala Herb Brooks with the 1980 US hockey team? Something, anything, would do. In reality, FIFA 06: RTFWC is a filler title for the Xbox 360 launch and we are expecting great things next season when EA completely dedicates itself to the next generation. I am very confident the next instalment will be a berger, I think maybe they've just over stretched themselves especially as the next gen games take a lot longer to develop but we all deserve more than this. With that said, FIFA 06 RTFWC is pretty fun to play. One of the first things to... Read review

Stick to PES
Review of FIFA 06 Road to FIFA World Cup (Xbox 360) by  blueblood121

Advantages: Good graphics, exceptional commentary
Disadvantages: Limited features, appaling gameplay, outdated live service.

...-fashioned. If you do get into a game though, it plays as if you were offline, which is something. Overall, once you've played this game, you'll almost certainly realise that this is no more than a filler title for the Xbox 360. The console lacks any other football game, and as the market for them is so important, the 360 needs a title of some sort to represent it. Unfortunately, RTFWC is so poor in so many ways that you'll find it hard to accept it as a 360 game at all. The fact that it is so limited is, all things considered, completely atrocious. Most 360 users would be much happier with a port of the Xbox version of FIFA 06, which offers so many more options, and equally good commentary. The drop in visuals would be a worthy sacrifice if we were given a playable game. What really worries me about this game is that, as a gamer and not... Read review
