Investing in the FTSE 100 Index

Advantages: Cheap products, easy to invest in, good dividend yield, unlike shares in a company will never go bust
Disadvantages: Index concentrated in 10 companies meaning more risk, not for ethical investors, sensitive to oil prices

...have been investing in the FTSE 100 index for the past 9 months. Personally I think the FTSE 100 index is a good place to invest for stockmarket novices and veterans alike. There are many different products that allow you to gain some kind of exposure to the index, which is made up to the 100 largest companies in the UK.

In this review I will cover the following in regard to the FTSE 100 index:

- Methods for trading in the FTSE 100 index
- My personal view on the current value of the index

Advantages: strength
Disadvantages: follows other markets

...in its growth rate, the ftse is tending to follow suit and sink in value, when in my view, the uk economy is, overall, in far better shape that the counterparts. However, the inevitable sell off will ensue and pundits have been talking about a head and shoulders formation on the ftse for asome time now, so we could be entering a prolonged period of negative decline on this exchange. This is not my opinion, i think that growth will pcik up once again ...

Stock market gains with no risk

Advantages: No risk product with a reasonable chance of decent returns
Disadvantages: It is not as good as it seems at first glance

.inlandrevenue.gov.uk. How Much Will It Make? First of all, the investment runs from 17th June 2003. If you invest prior to this date, you will earn 3.25% pa (gross taxable) on your money up to 16th June 2003. The full amount is then invested. Secondly, you cannot lose capital. While the return on this bond is linked directly to the FTSE100 index, if the FTSE should fall, you will get back your initial investment. Remember, if you had chosen to invest in a normal bank savings account, you would have earned interest. In this scenario, you have risked the interest you would have earned for no gain. Thirdly, if the FTSE100 rises between 0% and 65% during the 5 year period, you will get the FULL return of the FTSE100 without taking any of the risks associated with stock market investment. This is the best scenario, unless interest rates on bank savings ...

take care when paying

Advantages: easy language/layout
Disadvantages: no great quality of tips

city confidential is a tip sheet that covers all sectors and most market capitalisations mainly outside the big ftse 100.the tips are not bad but htey do trumpet their own success with a winner and not so when they pick a loser- most tip sheets probably are the same. the main reason i am writing this is that they usually offer a 3 month free trial period and a discounted 1st yr subscription vs £79 (at time of writing)-but take care, if you do not like what you read then send a letter of cancellation in ample time before the trial period ends or they will take a fair part of the subscription fee. also if you think of cancellation after the 3 month period,i.e. after they drew money out of your account, don't hold much breath of getting any back, in my case i decided to cancel after 7 months and requested a refund for the remaining issues ...

ROCK OF AGES

Advantages: POSTAL AND INTERNET BANKING
Disadvantages: LACK OF BRANCHES

I?ve been having some problems with Internet security and under advice I decided to move my almost insignificant funds from an Internet account into a more secure scheme. I thought of postal banking. My father bless his soul came up with Northern Rock. A building society that became a bank, it is now the 8th largest UK quoted bank by market capitalisation and in the FTSE 100 companies on the London Stock Exchange. I checked out the website at www.northernrock.co.uk . It offers a friendly and simple front end, the user interface becomes increasingly complex as you search for your specific product. The site HOME page offers the usual Help and Contact details. PRODUCTS Financial products fall into 4 major categories mortgages, savings, loans, and credit cards. CORE BUSINESS - At 56 branches, postal, telephone and Internet ...
