Ever since the end of Sandman, there was never any comic book that could satisfy my appetite for the epic, multi-layered and complex plots I had grown to love in Gaiman's work. That is, until Fables came along.
The premise is simple, yet effective: the characters of our beloved fairy tales (Snow White, the Frog Prince, and Pinocchio to name but a few) have fled the shadow of a vicious conqueror known as the Adversary, and set up home in New York. But, be assured, this is no children's story. Rather, it is a dark tour-de-force, with often surprising re-interpretation of popular tales and characters.
Bill Willingham has a striking talent for taking such familiar stories, and inverting them to create something wondrous. How else would have the gall to turn the Prince Charming into a womanising cad, yet humanise the Big Bad Wolf so much that he becomes one of the true heroes of the series? It ought to crash and burn. But, instead, it gives the reader one of the best graphic novel series to date. From its subtle political nuances to the wonderfully-realised array of characters, it is a masterpiece. Gone are the saccharine-sweet Disney versions, with fairy godmothers on hand for every crisis. In Fables, no one is guaranteed a happily ever after.
I have given it to friends who would normally scorn something as 'basic' as a comic book. Each of them found their prejudice turning to love, and they devoured the series as greedily as I myself did. Do not be deceived by the comic book format, for this series is literature in itself. It is a powerful and addictive read, and one I would thoroughly recommend.
Advantages: it's an enjoyable romp Disadvantages: a little too explanatory

Comics don't really allow for the kind of internal monolgue which fiction often utilizes to display character, but Willingham could have tried harder to offer a suggestion of hidden depths.
The illustration is what I tend to consider as fairly standard. Its not impressively original, or even very stylish. It does the job, and gives a nice sense of realism to the fanatstical elements of the plot, but it isn't going to wow you.
Overall I liked Fables, the compelation includes a short story about how Snow White and Wolf first met, and the comic isn't bad. On the other hand it isn't as impressive as you feel it could be. The central premise seems to have ...
