I first heard of this story in an English lesson at school. The teacher read a few chapters of it in lesson and I started to gain interest. I asked her the name of the author and set off to the school library the next day to find it. As soon as I found it I took it out and home to read.
*About Benjamin Zephaniah* Benjamin Zephaniah has quite an interesting life and I will briefly explain it now. His full name is Benjamin Obadiah Iqbal Zephaniah, which is Christian, Jewish and Muslim. He was born in the district of Handsworth in Birmingham. (Which is kind of close to me!) He is a poet as well as a storywriter. Many of his poems and stories have a serious message and they cover topics like: racism, animal rights, pollution and equality between boys and girls. *Storyline* Now on to the actual story itself. The story is basically about a boy who has a very happy life but then fate comes along and messes it up. The boy, namely Martin, is happy with life and has a girlfriend, namely Natalie. One night with some friend they go to a nightclub and hang around for a few hours. Martin meets an older friend who offers him a ride home in a stolen car. They have a car accident and this is where everything changes for Martin. The car sets on fire and he manages to escape but its too late... his face becomes permanently disfigured. (Hence the name face). The story goes on to explain how he lives through the hospital life and what happens when he gets out.
When in in hospital he finds out his friend got away with a broken arm and the driver ends up dead. Even worse, his face is permanently burnt and disfigures and the rest of his body temporally. The main part of the story is how he copes in hospital. He is not allowed through out a major part of the story to see his own face because of the psychological effects. He has to have various operations to fix his face as best as possible but nevertheless his love life changes. This may sound pretty detailed but in actual fact it's sketchy details. *Readability* It is very easy to read and understand the plot of Face. It is all written in Standard English and from a narrator’s point of view. There is some slang, which is speech of characters and in the dialect of Benjamin Zephaniah himself. I feel that the book could have been longer as it is an enjoyable read. Then again it is described in such a way so that it doesn’t really need to be longer. It isn't totally addictive so you can put it down but not much. However, it keeps you interested till the last word. Also, it is a lot different from other novels I have read. This is in terms of size, if you look at many novels like "War Of The Worlds" or "The Lord Of The Rings". I can't really compare it with other works by Mr. Zephaniah as I haven’t read any however I would be happy to read this to any other book by him again.
*In Conclusion* I find this book excellent value for money costing only £4.99 at all good bookstores. Overall it is an excellent read for teen or adult readers. An excellent first read from this author. For more information see the link above.
I hope you found this useful and thank you for taking time to read this.
Advantages: Tells us about prejudice and discrimination Disadvantages: nothing
...be pretty well OK. His face is the last thing he bothers to think about. He can't really feel the damage, you see, because of the painkillers.
Martin has to learn to deal with all the different reactions of ordinary people to his terrible injuries. It's all a bit different being on the receiving end of other people's prejudices, about disabilities, or race, or anything else. Benjamin Zephaniah is a black poet and writer himself, so perhaps he has ... ...be well learnt.
Written in very simple language, Zephaniah brings the streets to life - I especially like the scene where Natalie misinterprets the three girls' smiles and gets ready for a fight, only to be asked if she likes clubbing. You can warm to these characters, for all their faults. ...
